<< <i>Odd that the Maundy set would use the original ERII obverse. Tradition is a mighty force, I guess. >>
All Maundy sets of EIIR have used the first (Gillick) portrait of the Queen, since her coronation in 1953.
I'm afraid to be alive without being aware of it
<< <i>You mean, no one is sold on the idea that they are limiting the issue to 8,000 sets?
The Millenium (year 2000) set of 13 had a mintage limit of 15,000, but due to lack of demand, they only struck 13,180. Go figure!! So I wonder how many of the 8,000 limit they will actually strike.

Zar,
In 2002, they did issue a similar 13 piece set in 22k gold, to commemorate the "Golden Jubilee" or the Queen. Issue was limited to 2002 sets, and seldom seen on the market, but out there. I guess her 80th birthday only merits silver. Maybe if she sticks around for another 20 years, they will do another gold set for her centenary birthday.
