Yes, ridiculous. I hope the buyers stay away in droves. All this for maybe 35-40 USD worth of silver and another 20 max for minting and boxing plus say 15 for postage would generously allow for maybe 85 USD or up to 50 pounds. With the rest you pay the price for stupidity!

    Well, just Love coins, period.
  • Odd that the Maundy set would use the original ERII obverse. Tradition is a mighty force, I guess.

In the last few years the Royal Mint has made every effort to fleece collectors, I for one will be staying awat from everything other than the BU Britannia and the four coin Britannia proof sets.

You mean, no one is sold on the idea that they are limiting the issue to 8,000 sets? image

All Maundy sets of EIIR have used the first (Gillick) portrait of the Queen, since her coronation in 1953.

The Millenium (year 2000) set of 13 had a mintage limit of 15,000, but due to lack of demand, they only struck 13,180. Go figure!! So I wonder how many of the 8,000 limit they will actually strike.

    Zar,

In 2002, they did issue a similar 13 piece set in 22k gold, to commemorate the "Golden Jubilee" or the Queen. Issue was limited to 2002 sets, and seldom seen on the market, but out there. I guess her 80th birthday only merits silver. Maybe if she sticks around for another 20 years, they will do another gold set for her centenary birthday.
