Lots of big names changing sweaters, proven defensemen getting huge contracts.
I know there are some Bruins and Oilers fans on the board, nice pickups/resigns for both teams, the Bruins getting Zdeno Chara and Marc Savard and losing Hal Gill. That can only be considered an improvement. The Oil resigned Dwayne Roloson and Fernando Pisani but now Pronger wants out. There had been rumors of a trade to San Jose involving Sharks goalie Evgeni Nabokov but with Rollie coming back I guess that deal's off too. Might not have worked out, Mrs Pronger probably doesn't want Chris anywhere near California girls either (Oil fans will know what rumors I'm talking about).
Seems to me that Vancouver is losing a lot of good players.
The Sharks had a shopping list of a #1 Line LW, and a #1-2 defenseman. I guess we have been underbidding all day as all the best available Dmen have been signing for big money. Just saw that the Sharks signed CURTIS BROWN. Yeah, that'll help a bunch. (15 points in 71 games in 2005-06)
Really, was he in THAT much demand?
How do you NHL fans feel about your team's pickups/losses so far (if any?).

Losing Jovo is a blow, but with the raises for the Sedin twins and the Luongo pickup, we couldn't afford him. We picked up Willie Mitchell today, which softens the blow a bit.
We still need to move Cloutier, who is far to expensive for a backup, and my feeling is that Morrison needs to be moved. Mo is not quite a top-line center, and we already have a #2 in Henrik Sedin.
Top priority now is to find a RW to play with Naslund.
I think that Boston did well in acquiring both Chara & Savard. I was sad to hear the news of the Chara signing because of the money involved...that set the bar REALLY high and kept Jovo-Cop away from South Florida as we definately weren't going to open up the wallet like that to get our (former) guy back.
I hated losing Luongo and especially for a potential 'head-case'. Bertuzzi is very talented, but wherever he goes he'll have that 'incident' hanging over his head. Who knows though, maybe this'll be a fresh start and he can get his head straight. I don't know much about Auld though, anyone have any kind words about him....PLEASE?!

Prongers 6.25 until 2009-10 must be looking like quite the bargain for teams wanting to trade for him. Can't wait to see what Lowe pulls off. I would love to know what all of the offerings have been so far.
I don't know what the Panthers were thinking trading Luongo for Bertuzzi.
<< <i>I don't know what the Panthers were thinking trading Luongo for Bertuzzi. >>
I think they wouldn't be able to afford Luongo after this season (he was going into the final year of his contract, and Keenan has always been a big Bertuzzi fan (he was the one who dealt Linden to Long Island for Bertuzzi when he was with the Canucks).
Bertuzzi is a risk, no doubt, but this deal could work out famously for both teams in the long run. My feeling is that Bertuzzi will thrive in a non-hockey oriented market, where he can walk the streets unrecognized, not get hounded by the media on a constant basis, and concentrate on hockey again. Don't forget that the Panthers also got a solid, up-and-coming goalie in Auld, one whose small salary will allow upgrades at other positions, and Bryan Allen will help to shore up that awful defensive corps. I really think that this deal will be win-win for both teams.
But, that's the business side of sports. I know that the Panthers really need at least another two solid defensemen to help Auld or anyone else out back there and maybe we can get one back for Roberts who wants to go back to Toronto where his daughter lives.

<< <i>True. Bert needed to get out of Canada in general, no? Wasn't he one of the scapegoats for the Olympic failure? Still, I see his career as being on its downside while I think Luongo's trajectory is still heading upward. >>
Don't forget that Bertuzzi will only play what, one game a year now in Colorado? He had to get out of Canada, but he had to get out of the northwest division even more.
Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12
Looking for Al Hrabosky and any OPC Dave Campbells (the ESPN guy)
Steve - Nice additions in the front office by the Blues. Who are they looking to acquire?

One game every three years in the Pepsi Center under the new NHL scheduling system. He definitely needed to go to an Eastern Conference team.

Yeah, people are pretty excited. It's nice to have some hope after the lockout and last year's disaster, which was hardly unexpected. Fans are a bit disappointed that Pleau was resigned as GM, but it sounds like the buck stops with JD.
Jay McKee has been the big acquisition so far. I would think they'll try to find a goalie somewhere, but beyond that, I actually just hope they start fresh. The team was so horrible last year that I don't know that a quick fix through free agency is possible. I'm hoping they can unload Tkachuk for prospects or picks, but his salary is probably a big impediment there. Not to mention his chronic playoff no-shows.
The Arnott signing was terrible. He has to be the worst 'big man' in the NHL. I've never seen another guy with his kind of size who gets pushed around that badly in front of the net.
Why won't the Wings trade Datsyuk? Will someone please, PLEASE explain that to me? He's a $4,000,000 a year player who get completely overwhelmed every year in April; a fine player for a team that's going nowhere but wants to put fannies in the seats (Phoenix, anyone?) but a TERRIBLE player to have on a team with post season aspirations. Or at least that's the way I see it. But the rest of the free world seems to think trading him would be a horrible mistake. I go to bed every night praying that I'll wake up and discover he got shipped to Pittsburgh for Ryan Malone + whatever, but it never happens.
Anyway, just in the last half hour or so I saw that the Blues are bringing Doug Weight back from Carolina and resigned coach Mike Kitchen. I like both moves. I always liked Doug Weight - even kept him on the team in my NHL 06 franchise after he was traded in real life - and I think Kitchen deserves a shot to prove his worth. All things considered, he did a decent job last year.
Edited to add: Agreed. Arnott = terrible signing.
<< <i>Hmmm, strange coincidence that that's the rumor behind the Pronger situation since his first trade was, according to speculation, necessitated by Brendan Shanahan's banging [These are hockey players, boo. They don't have intercourse.] of Craig Janney's wife. At least I think that's how the story went. Oh well, I reckon there's truth to both.

Wow. What can I say? I guess love makes vagrants of us all.
While I could not stomach the Thornton trade at the time, and felt they could have got more elsewhere I think the new moves give the B's some hope at least.

Nothing on ebay
It's a shame as he can still play with the best of them but I guess he's feeling that he's unable to play his A game anymore and anything less in unacceptable.

I heard about something similar in the Senators' camp last year. Apparently one of the Sens was banging Hasek's wife. Hasek wasn't injured during the playoffs; he quit on the team.

That's what people said about Kariya last year and he was a great lift to the team. His only problem was that, as a sniper, he had NO center that could get him the puck (except Legwand, who missed half the season to injury).
Poile is a great GM. I've been loyal to the Preds since season one and watched him build this team (slooowly) from the ground up. Arnott will be huge for them.

Still hoping they can shore up the blue line and find a legit #1 LW to play with Thornton and Cheechoo. Got to improve that power play.
I agree that Arnott was a positive pickup for Nashville. He has just killed us over the years, as has Kariya, and not looking forward to playing them next year if they're on the same line.
Oil apparently had talked to the Sharks about Pronger but the names Lowe had on his list were not ones we were willing to give up. Damn, he'd have looked nice in teal. Also, the chicks in NorCal tend to be more brainy and/or "earthy" when compared to their Southern Cal counterparts (not to mention the plethora of "chicks who dig chicks") so Mrs P might have felt better about that. When the temps go up in Anaheim and the skirts get shorter and the necklines get lower ol' Chris might find the temptation too much to handle...
Seems the B's should have used Raycroft to add some scoring punch with Tim Thomas and Hannu Toivinan already guarding the net.
I love the Chara and Savard pick-ups but I'll be surprised if the B's are done just yet. They have a lot of rebuilding to do in Mike O'Connell's wake.
JMO, Bob C.
EDIT: The Sharks should be looking to put Glenn Murray in Teal.
Thornton between Murray & Cheechoo would be the most productive line in NHL history.

Rumors to that effect have been floating around here, but I don't know how accurate they are. In a print interview with JT during the playoffs against Edmonton, the reporter asked about Samsonov, and JT said he had spoken to Samsonov but not about coming to the Sharks but the reporter then described JT as giving him a "sly grin".
Me, I'd love to get Murray on that line.
I think the B's are doing a darn good job of cleaning up O'Connell's mess. Least you can't call them cheap.
<< <i>Anyone know anything about this goalie Rask? >>
He was incredible at the last World Juniors playing for Finland. Got to see him live several times. Apparently he could be a really good one, but the Leafs had a glut in net with Pogge in the system as well.
