I bought a copy as soon as it came out and so far I find it to be an excellent book and fairly easy to use. It has gotten excellent reviews among darkside dealers and it is said that it is going to become the new standard reference for the chinese cash coins replacing Shojth (sp) (And I can believe it.). Like Shojth it uses drawings to identify the coins (If you do much with early cash you understand why they don't use photos.) and Hartill contains not only all the material from Shojth, but many more varieties that have been cataloged since Shojth came out in 1929.
  • This is exciting. I had not heard about the Hartill book. Does it use Schjoth numbers? Does it have sections for cash coins of Japan, Vietnam and Korea?

I found a little paperback ANA booklet called "Old Coins of China" to be invaluable, at least for Type. It served me well until I got my own copy of Schjoth, and it was easier to carry around in Beijing hutongs.
  • The David Hartill book is very very good. He does cross ref. to Scjoth and FisherDing. The coin book should be available from Scott Semans at coincoin.com. It has some info on Vietnam coins (but not much).

If you are looking for a great new book on Vietnamese coins, you are in luck. The book is "The Historical Cash Coins of Vietnam" by Allan Barker. It's in color with b/w rubbings. You can visit this website for more info and scans of some of the pages:
