Excessive shipping, check out my story

I bought 4 very low end PSA 9s for two of my sets. They were all listed Buy It Now, priced from 1.99 to 2.99. The seller doesn't combine shipping and somewhat high shipping of $4. We all the scam, loss money on the sale, make it up in shipping and "handling". I buy them anyway, as it still works out as an OK deal, and I feel like buying something.

The seller sends the invoices, and puts $1.50 insurance, required for EACH card. I email the seller and say, no way. It was listed as optional in the auction, and I don't wanna insure a card(s) that are worth 5 or 6 bucks, for the cost of $1.50 each. I asked the seller to resend the invoice, to reflect this.

Today the seller emails and writes "then only pay 70 cents for delivery confirmation thanks", nothing more. It seems to me that the $20 dollars to ship 5 cards, should easily cover the cost of delivery confirmation (which is only 35 cents isn't it?) I email back, and tell him/her that this isn't listed in the auction, and I am not required to pay it. I add that I would pay it, but only 70 cents total, not for each card.

I know there are better ebay stories than this. But I wanted some of you guys to come up with my next email, when this scammer tries to milk me for another 2 bucks. I'm a little pissed, and am willing to string this person out at this point.

This is the first time I bought from one of these "no combined shipping" types. Last time, no way I promote a seller that uses this flagrent scam to get a few extra bucks.

  • Yes, there are a lot of people out there with crappy shipping policies.

I personally charge about $3.00-5.00 per auction...padded envelope, shipping, delivery confirmation, gas to the Post Office, paypal fees etc. However, I would never charge more than $8.20, not incl inurance or del.conf for singles.

That is the max price for as many as you can fit into one of those flat rate boxes. Those boxes also don`t cost anything and old newspaper makes a great filler. More of these should be used.

There is also the thought that they might be trying to get around the Ebay fees by upping the shipping a bit.
A practice I fully agree with. I don`t see anything wrong with someone that wants to sell a card for $20.00 listing as BIN for $1.00 with $19 shipping. Either way you are paying $20 if you buy it. No one is forced to buy anything off Ebay, however, when you do buy it is within the terms listed in the auction.

The insurance scam is another thing. That`s just plain fraud. You can`t charge for ins. on individual items you send in the same package and then insure the whole thing for one rate.

Of course, Ebay has an issue with the low BIN and high shipping....they get screwed ouy of money that way image

The best way to fix the issue of crappy sellers is just not to buy from them...lost sales fixes most problems.

    I agree with the Baker.

For not much more than 8 bucks the seller could ship to you by Priority Mail using a flat rate box.

You're gracious in buying from him and agreeing to his terms. I wouldn't give him any more than the $20 that you agreed to and the stated means of shipping.

    Good luck.
  • yeah and be sure to leave him a scathing "positive" feeback like i do in similar situations..

    Easy to understand.
    Here goes:

Sellers have smartened up and now want to cover "all their costs" with a shipping and handling fee.

    It costs money for:

    Packaging

    Listing Fee's

    Selling Fee's

    Pay Pal fee's

    Image hosting fee's etc. etc.

All these "FEE'S" are now factored into the equation and that is why just about everyone
is charging for them in the form of higher shipping & insurance fee's.

When you sell a 25.00 to 50.00 item, it is now costing the seller 5.00 in fee's to pull it off.

That is what you are paying for, or at least a growing percentage.

    That is the bottom line.

I would simply send payment for the amount of the cards and shipping. If he complains, say you are paying what was required in the auction.
  • I have no problem with paying the stated shipping. I do disagree with "no combined shipping" sellers, I think it's chickenS**T. But I did agree to buy these items knowing this.

I got an email back from her
"hi it should say in the shipping instructions that if you use paypal delivery confirmation is required" The impression I get, pay the 70 cents per card. I never implied I would paying with paypal, but I guess she assumed

I told her that if I was gonna get charged 70 cents a card, that'd be paying with a personal check, that she can deal with, hold, wait to clear, whatever. But I would not paypal with paypal if it'd cost me an extra $2.80.

I know it sounds like I'm being a pest over this, but I feel I'm being nickled and dimed for twenty bucks worth of cards. I don't need to save the money, I've spent two hundred times that on cards this morning, and another two thousand last night on hockey jerseys. I simply don't like people trying to backdoor me or anyone else on ebay

  • makes sense to me.. you just gotta find the balance between the principle of it, and when it becomes a distraction to you.... if you spent big $$ on cards and this is over a few bucks, maybe just pay it and let it go.. maybe she needs the money more than you do?

If he wants a separate shipping charge for each card be sure to tell him you want each card mailed individually. And tell him where he can stick these extra charges.
  • I would tell the seller that he should have been smart enough to make the extra chagres required BEFORE THE AUCTION ENDED! I know we are not talking about a lot of money, but it would be more about the principle to me. Believe it or not, I'm not the type of person that turns the other cheek to go with the flow in order to avoid trouble.

if they aren't going to combine shipping then get 4 seperate invoices and pay each one seperately. i'd use paypal. unless the d/c charge was listed in the shipping on the auction then don't pay it. pay seperately then they need to produce 4 seperate shipping d/c's for paypal in case of an item not received charge backback.

A seller cannot charge a DC-fee of 70-cents X the number of cards
that go in the same parcel. If the subject seller is doing this, eBay
will put a stop to it. Ditto, the multiple insurance fees.

A seller is allowed one fee of "each type" per parcel. One insurance
fee, one DC fee, one sig/return fee, etc. Those fees are limited to
the "actual cost" of the service.

The disclaimer: "I do not combine shipping," does not change the
    above rules.

If a seller wants to add on a bunch of extra handling fees there are
ways to do it, within eBay guidelines. "Special packaging fees" are
one example of permitted "extra fees," if they are stated in the
    listing.

If someone operates a real business, the "fees" are supposed to
be covered by the sale price of the merchandise. eBay has spread
the myth that anybody can run a business; obviously, it is just not
    so.

I do not have a lot of customers, but I have the same customers
coming back every month, in part, because the shipping costs are
priced into the items I sell. Buyers know that my "free shipping" is
not really "free;" they are paying for it when they buy my stuff, but
they feel good about not having to worry about a post-sale
    discussion about "shipping fees."

Sellers that gouge on shipping are cutting their own throats; it
only works once per buyer, and those buyers "tell their friends."

correct.. dont pay the mofo anything for delivery confirmation, thats his own responsibility, and if he doesnt use it, it's his own ass if something happens that you dont get your package..

  • if a seller doesn't combine shipping...

make sure you pay for each card separately (the paypal fees on low-dollar cards will add up)

demand that he mail the cards separately

send separate emails asking when you will receive each card

and of course, do not pay any additional charges

    what is the seller's id?

I'm just gonna take a wild guess here - marybayer29?

If so, I had the same experience and I told her to shove it. Paypal wasn't offered, so I suspected that she would cash my check and not send anything since I didn't give in to her little extortion fee (other buyers indicated they didn't get their item after not paying for insurance). I also reported her to ebay for charging post auction fees (that's a violation). You should do the same, regardless of the seller. I'm sure you can live without a few low end psa 9's, and refusing to pay would teach the seller that there are penalties when they don't follow the rules.
