Clearwater Coin Show Report

Here is my analysis of spending the day at the Clearwater Fla coin Show......
The crowd seemed quite good for a friday.....much better than past few shows
Some new dealers set up this time....but some major dealers who were here in the past not here this weekend
Coin availability was decent.....but not much killer material.......
but in currency saw a ton of quality inventory........
I decided to start buying currency now,,, but have realized sadly that currency prices have gone up a bunch in the past few yrs
Seemed anything decent i liked was 4 figures
I met one currency dealer who dealed in definitely hi end graded currency
& when i mean hi end I mean hiiiiiiiiiii end !!!!!! or ie........ expensive.....
for example.......see a 4 currency run I have never seen & ask the price......I'm still in shock but I think he told me TEN MILLION $$$
I ask for a second price & he quotes me ONE MILLION $$$ ......
then I ask if he has anything for under a million $$
then shows me 6 figure notes.......
this dealer claims his inventory is worth $350 million $$.......this company was called Arcade.......a outfit out of Tarpon springs......a local town here....
does anyone know this firm??
Anyways didn't buy any notes......prices were too steep for what I wanted.....oh well
started looking for 50-60's hi grade proof coinage in deep cameo.......
but not much available.....only picked up a few coins but all were superb. & prices were very fair.....
proof coins in PCGS holders were scarce compared to NGC
BUT if u wanted proof coinage from the past 15 yrs.....tons available
one dealer had cases full of this krap in a new grading service i never heard of.....
when I asked if he had any NGC/PCGS slabs he reacted like i asked the question in Mandarin........
didn't seem to know what I was talking about
needless to say I didn't buy nothing from him & he appeared to be selling zero from what I saw
why is it some dealers appear to be busy all day long & others rarely have anyone at there tables?
also I noticed many dealers were not at there tables & had to come back multiple times to view coins
U can't sell coins if your not behind your table!!!!
Dealers seemed very friendly & talkative overall......much friendlier than previous few shows
But not even ONE dealer asked me if I had anything for sale
that's a first for me........
ACG coins were hard to find as few dealers offered them.......I see less & less of them at this show every yr...great trend
maybe the public has wised up & won't but that drek......
Saw quite a few SEGS & PCI coins of interest......but most were priced at near what a NGC/PCGS coin would bring....
so bought zero of those
Saw some killer koins.....one that I loved was a 38-D buffalo......NGC 68* & lovely toning......a monster eye appeal coin......
I just knew the price would be out of this world but i still asked......$7K......oh well
if u need DMPL dollars......selection was pretty nice & some real sharp coins & prices were very fair for the quality.....
most dealers seemed to be in a mood to sell......
which is good since these days setting up at a show isn't cheap.....one has to sell a lot of coins just to break even
One dealer had some outstanding certified error coins......another area I'm starting to dabble in as well
Well that's it.........show was fun & worth the trip......just didn't buy as much as I had hoped

Currency prices have been going bonkers over the past year or so as the slabbing companies have gotten into it big time and many
coin dealers are jumping on the currency bandwagon.

Hi grade (MS68, MS69 and MS70) for what is otherwise common currency have been going through the roof. It is getting to be
like a feeding frenzy in general with currency and I think it is getting out of hand with some crazy overspeculation going on.

It is a great hobby but the landscape is changing rapidly. A number of people are throwing some big money around but I wonder
how long the party can last before there is a downturn.
  • Nice rep[ort and yes currency has really gone bonkers the past year. There will be no down turn in currency. The same thing is happening with stamps. Big money going into the real collectible stuff.
