  • The SMR is a complete joke. Its like looking at the business section of a 6 month old paper and trying to fiqure out what a stock you are intertested in is worth today. Now they price cards that don't exist. I don't know why they even bother.

Missing the point - I'm no sycophant but SMR is just that - it is a Sports Market Report. It is intended to be used as a guide, not as a retail price list. Sure, many of the values are out of whack, but many of them are not and it is up to an intelligent informed collector to determine what value he puts on any particular card. The value extension to include cards in grades with zero pop is just an educated extrapolation. '59 Morrell values are carried out to include 9s - even though only one card to date has even garnered a 7! In spite of what some would think, cards are not commodities. They are worth what someone is willing to pay.

I'm all for bashing, but the SMR is not an icon. No sense in accusing it of having clay feet. It don't even got legs.

I am not sure what is more useless, SMR or Beckett price guides.

If you check the SMR on the page before the one titled PSA Grading Standards, you will see a blurb about Prices. It includes a statement about cards being priced, though not having been graded or sold, but by being compared to those cards which have. Just as in the old days of Tuff Stuff & Beckett, these numbers we rely on for guidance are merely the opinions of people just like us, the only difference being the numbers get published. They come from info gathered based on the buying & selling activities of US! It's not a perfect system by any means, but it seems to have worked pretty well.....

I like to take into account Beckett, Tuff Stuff, SMR and ebay when considering cards.

I have found people who will pay just about anything if they want it bad enough.

So basically, buy LOW and sell HI guys!
