As some of you are aware, I play poker for a living. I'm heading out to Vegas tomorrow for the World Series of Poker, a series of 30-some tournaments with buy-ins ranging from $500-$10,000 per tourney. I plan to play 4 or 5 tournaments while I'm out there- hopefully I can pull off at least one good showing. Who knows, maybe I'll come back a millionaire. Big bucks..... No whammies.....

Good luck!
Hope to see you on TV?
I wouldn't mind being in the Main Event - as long as I could last longer than Goldie Hawn's son - he lost to Sammy Farha in the FIRST hand - all 10K gone! He had 10s over aces - Sammy had Aces over 10s.

As Sexton says, "May all your cards be live and your pots be monsters"........or something like that.
Kick ass!!

I would be happy to meet Shana before she left!

Funny, I was thinking exactly the same thing larryallen proposed earlier today, so y'all better root for me.

<< <i>Thanks for all the well-wishes. Mike, I did play in two WPT Main Events: I won my way into the first, and paid my way into the second after doing well in another tourney. Didn't cash in either and didn't get to meet Shana.

Sorry it didn't work out. Which events did you try playing??
For those of you who don't want to know any results, don't read on.
I've been following along, not a lot of notable names doing well. When I see a top 10 list, there's only been one name I've heard of. I did see Lee Watkinson won a tourney, but I didn't think that bald headed guy was you.
Noticed in another tourney, Sam Farha beat Phil Ivey heads up at the end. Can't wait to see that on ESPN in a couple of months.
Helmuth finished second in one tourney, and Alan Cunningham has won one already too. He looks like the most unintimidating guy I've ever seen, but how many bracelets does he have? 18 tournaments down, how many more to go??? But haven't noticed Ferguson, Negraneu, Juanda, etc.
At least not yet. I'm looking forward to watching it on TV. For some reason, I can't get enough of this stuff.
Too bad I'm not worth a $hit at it.

I wasn't really concentrating too much on what was going on in the tourneys I wasn't in. I played a 2k NL, 3k limit, 1500 limit, 1500 stud, and 5k NL events. The 5k was the most brutal because I had built up a decent stack after the 2nd break, flopped a straight, and got knocked out by a guy who put me all in on a bluff and hit a runner runner flush. Farha was at the table and said that was one of the worst beats he's seen, and that's saying something with the cards he plays. That's life I guess.
Hellmuth was hovering aound the top for 3 tourneys in a row and lost to some kid heasds up- that brought the house down. Neagraneau was at a final table, and some other guys did well too. I'm not too much into the TV/celebrity aspect of poker because I know there are hundreds of players with the skill that lack the bankroll to play all the major tourneys, but lesser skilled players like Gavin Smith, Robert Varkonyi, and Huck Seed get to play everything because their buyins are paid for.

I have several friends that are there and I've told each of them to take several packs of nice casino regulated playing cards (at least Aces, Kings, and Queens) and a black sharpie. There was a kid at my local casino that played the $1,500 (2nd tourney) awhile ago and he lasted about 3 -4 hours. He said it was an amazing experience especially when he had Brunson & Ivey at the same table with him. How surreal is that?
I couldn't go. Already blew my bankroll for the next 2 months. I'm having a difficult time with it right now, so I'm taking a break and just finding solice in my hockey cards.
Love to see Hellmuth lose.
I still play - "practice" - poker and like it a lot.
But, for me? If there's a way to lose...
I'll find it!!!!

Just got this story on Fri but have been "preoccupied."
My best friend's parents were in Italy and bumped into Freddy Deeb. His dad went over to shake his hand and tell him he has seen him on TV.
Well, Freddy invited them for dinner that nite and they had the best time!
Think Helmuth woulda done the same?
mike
In a tourney last year, I was the alpha dog at my table, the only one making moves and stealing pots. Then Freddy was moved to my table and between the two of us, we must've taken down 90% of the pots. We had a series of hands where we made reasonably big bluffs against each other and showed our hands. We both left that table with a good amount of chips. It felt good knowing I could mix it up with one of the better players around. Then I got moved to a table with Erik Seidel and John D'Agastino to my immediate left with big stacks which didn't bode well for me.
