NGC body bagged this coin. It looks like it received a dipping awhile ago, but I thought it had a strong chance of getting a PR58 to PR61.

Any guesses why it was BB'd?

I think this is a reflection from my crappy photo.

NGC said the coin was "Stained".

I thought light cleaning could have been a possibility ... but "Stained"?

I got a toned Grant body bagged by NGC for the same reason.

And... I had cracked it out of an old NGC slab trying for an upgrade.

I believe that meant, prior to its having been removed from a dipping, the toning had eaten into the metal and "stained" the coin. That's what I had tried to get at, but done a very poor job of in my prior post.

These are bad reflections from the photos. Definitely not the stains.

No, but the lighter/filmy areas appeared as if they might have been the result of something having been applied to the surfaces to "alter" them.

The lighter/filmy looking areas I noted might in fact be the "stained" (by the now-removed toning) areas resulting in the no-grade.

I don't think a coin of that caliber should get a BB- this is one of the inconsistencies that drive me nuts about pcgs and ngc....

I highly agree. I have seen many, many uglier proof Morgans in holders. It is on its way to ANACS.

My guess, ANACS says PF62.

If anything, the old pre-2006 ANACS would have holdered it, as they favored the needs of the collector
over what the marketplace thought.

I'm curious what the "new" ANACS did.

They gave it a PF63. I was thinking PF58 to PF61, so my customer should be happy. Still don't see the staining that NGC referred to.
