Update on goofBay "War of the Nerds" Begins

It appears that rather than welcome the help of
"goofbay-assisted" buyers/sellers, the world's largest
online auction "venue" may have decided to "thwart"
the goofbay software.

I started noticing the problem 24-hours ago; when
the formats of the listing numbers began to look
slightly different than they have in the past.

This number was posted on the coin forum as a
goofbay "choker." 180000888989

Some of the functions still seem to work on some
numbers and not on others. Some do not work
at all.

The top IT people at the "venue" are geniuses, and I
suspect the little software company in England
has some pretty smart folks working too. Looks
like the war of the nerds is about to begin.

Some "network" news types have been informed
of the controversy, and may soon be asking:

"If 'private auctions' open the way for consumer
fraud, why would the 'venue' work so hard to protect
them?"

Your posts remind me of the Chris farley SNL character that puts everything in "quotation marks". Just kidding.

    Pretty cool.

Uncovering "private auctions" is cooler than cracking the DaVinci Code!

It will interesting to see what happens.

I'm pretty sure the information revealed by the goofbay features, private feedback and bidders and all that, violate the TOS for ebay developers, so I'm not surprised to see ebay taking action against it.

    goofbay announcement, 6-28-06:
    ///////////////////////////////////////////

""""""""""As some of you are aware we have been in constant communication with eBay regarding our tools and service to you the general ebay public. eBay have objected to a number of our tools and we have reasoned and tweaked the tools to try to fit in with eBay policies. Unfortunately our API (our programming interface to eBAy) access has been removed and as a direct result, none of our tools now work. We are not sure why eBay has revoked our access without dialogue, it may be because they object more strongly to the tools than they have told us thus far.

We are keen to re-instate our access and re-enable the tools we have, we are therefore asking our community to show their support by adding their email address to our petition that if the need arises and we do not get back our API access we will show them the community solidarity.

Sign our petition by entering your email address in the box below. (1000 Signatures so far) """"""""""""

NOTE: In the past I have stated here and in many other
venues that "shill bidding" was NOT a major problem on
eBay. My conclusion was based on knowledge that I have
regarding the abiltiy of eBay's "trust & safety" department
to constantly monitor bidding activities in real-time, and on
anecdotal evidence of the NARUs resulting from such
    monitoring.

    I WAS wrong.

The actions of eBay during the past few days clearly show
that, while the venue is and has always been "aware" of
the volume of shillers, the corporation has no desire to
totally solve the "problem." Any claims that the information
that has "leaked out" is private/proprietary amount to
a de facto protectionist scheme that harms consumers,
    enables scamsters, and enriches eBay.

Goofbay - and other pro-consumer software developers -
should not consider rolling over now that the meower is
out of the bag. Hopefully, the Federal Trade Commission
will take a look at the coduct of eBay, and determine
that some "changes" are needed if consumers are to
be protected in commerce conducted on the world's
biggest "online mall and auction house."
