To grade or not to grade...modern rookie prospects

Don't mean to plagerise but that's my question. For the first time in my life I decided to "invest" in a particular player last year -- Charlie Frye, the 2005 Cleveland Browns rookie QB. I built up a collection of over 1000 cards of which there are about 150 that I'd like to send in for grading. For those "speculators" out there, my dilema is this; when is the opportune time to send the cards in for grading? I want to do it now because I think I've got some nice cards and it would be good to have them slabbed and ready to sell at the right time (hopefully when he gets several wins under his belt and looks good doing it) but if I do it now and he flops, not only am I out the investment in the cards but I'm out the grading fees as well. If I wait to make sure he pans out, will I be ready to sell at the opportune moment (without paying out the nose for an express grading fee). I'm new at the speculation part of this hobby/business so any opinions will help.
By the way, let me know if you think Frye was a sucker bet or a good choice in investment. Too late to turn back now but I'm just curious.

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

hold the others in "reserve."
