Home Buy, Sell & Trade - Cards & Memorabilia

Are these people nuts?!?!

I thought I'd start a thread for some of the crazy stuff that goes on with non sports cards on eBay. (Buyers paying 10 times what some cards are worth, sellers crazy opening bids or descriptions, ect..)

Like this sellers description of a 1966 Topps Batman black bat set:

"Please examine photos carefully. Even though this set is in mint condition, it is not for the perfectionist who demands perfect centering, corners, etc."

That is a funny disclaimer, but I get it. Centering is considered a qualifier to the card condition grade, but the "after all they're only bubble gum cards" leads me to suspect other problems. Many people use the term "mint" to mean "not torn in half".

  • Yes, I agree as well that his statement hints at other problems. I would be retracting my bid on that one.

That is very condescending to imply that people who like their cards mint are somehow called perfectionists (just short of saying anal retentive).

Some people do use MINT to mean not dragged out of a sewer. MINT means mint--its the one condition that is least debatable.

  • they don't look that bad to me.. but not mint. NM on average is still not bad.. the seller has 100% feedback also... not sure.. no guts no glory.. could be a score, could be a scam... hard to tell.. they're in pages, which makes it hard to see them clearly, but in the big picture, it's a good thing they're protected and not being mauled for picture taking.

but, he said, "they're ONLY bubblegum cards, right?"

personally i could do without that kind of demeaning superior attitude from a coin guy... how would he like it if i sold some crappy coins and said well hey, they're only coins.. what difference does condition make?

    final verdict: seller must die

One thing to watch for in sets that have been
    stored in those sheets is:

If the sheets have been in three-ring binders,
the three cards on the top can/do get VERY
    yellow top edges.

I buy some sets at garage sales - Marvel stuff -
but this set is getting pricey. It might be
"a score," but I cannot tell if the corners
are as sharp as they should be.

By the time these are graded, someone will have
about $500 in them, and most of them will not be
    "NQs."

Many old coin guys do not know much about cards
so these could be sleepers, but I am going to
guess no........... and fail to bid.
