Asheville Tourists Manager Joe Mikulik

The latest and greatest tantrum thrown by a baseball manager! Would appreciate if someone could find a link to a story or video of this. Thanks....image

Comments

  • Rates right up there with a classic Piniella or Martin tantrum. Great stuff...
  • That was great. Don't know if his sliding into the base was the best or the bats flying out of the dugout was the best...
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

If I were running the team, I would fire him. I can understand a little tantrum in a heated moment, but the extent to which he took it was an embarrassment to the organization, and I would not want someone like that associated with any organization I was in charge of.

Considering he has been with them for several years with success, it probably won't happen.

Maybe the Cubs could get him...at least then they would have a manager with a pulse.

With all the talk involving Ozzie Guillen and his " old school " approach lately I think it was great to see an old fashion temper tantrum. To me, that is old school managing, not Guillens bigotted, self rightous, put anyone he can down attitude. In the end that manager will end up buying the umpire a beer the next time they meet up and let bygones be bygones, whereas Guillen likes to mke enemies for life with the crap he spews.

    I saw this on ESPN.

No doubt everyone will have their opinion.

Some say he was an embarassment to the team/organization/young players etc.

Some say he should be fired or at minimum suspended.

He did nothing there I haven't seen from Lou Piniella over the years.

He may have gone a bit beyond but all and all - that was a "good ole baseball manager's tantrum."

And, BTW, I did not have the privilege of seeing what the ump did to provoke this...if anything?

  • the ump called the Rocket's kid safe at second on a pickoff attempt. Don't know if there were calls all game that led up to the eruption.

I think he needs a valium.
  • Has Delmon Young ever played for this guy??
  • I like his quote that he could get two mannequins from Sears to do a better umpiring job.....

Mikulik made sure not to come into contact with the umps during the whole tantrum. He kept it a good old fashioned wig out. Throwing the bats was a bit much but I don't think that was an embarrasment at all. Kudos to the umps for ignoring it and letting him get the wig out

I don't think it was an embarassment at all. It's great to see the manager have this much passion. He shouldn't be fired, that's for sure...

I read an article in the Toronto Sun this weekend that said Cito Gaston is one Ozzie Guillen outburst away from managing the ChiSox.

Maybe it wont be Cito Gaston, but dont be confused Sox fans, Guillen will be fired. His act will not be tolerated, winning or not. The only thing that has kept him there this long is the pitching staff he has.

There is a big difference between speaking your mind when there is thought behind it and when it is general bashing of whoever the flavor of the day is depending on Guillens mood swings. He has zero class and it is an insult to all the real old school players, coaches, managers, etc. to be grouped with him.

Guillen gets along with his players, he fills the seats at Comiskey park (yep, as far as I'm concerned...its still comiskey), and has already won one World Series and may be on his way to a second. Who was the last ChiSox manager to accomplish that? Guillen calls it the way he sees it (You can't balme anyone for being honest). He may be harsh at times, but no way in heck does that alone mean he should be fired. Plus, I actually like it as his attitude reminds me of myself.

Somehow I doubt if Jay Mariotti had called Guillen a "spic" and then said "well, in my country that just means somebody is lazy" that Mariotti would still have a job afterward. And then, if he DID still have the job, and he "apologized" by repeatedly calling Guillen a "piece of s---" that he wouldn't have THEN be fired. But hey, Ozzie's just telling it like he sees it image

As for Ozzie getting along with his players, ask Magglio and Big Hurt if he does...

This is one of those situations that I think there's more than we are getting.

Ozzie is way smarter than he sounds and has done more for the White Sox in one year than most managers may do in a lifetime. This is a statement of fact and in no way condoning his statements.

Now, to be fair, one has to understand Ozzie and where he comes from. I come from NYC and was raised with Cubans and Puerto Ricans. When they want to express ultimate disfavor for someone, they call them a fag - they viewed them as weak. De facto - it is a rank on someone; after the fact - it may look like bigotry - but I don't think Ozzie's a bigot. Just misguided by his way of life and culture.

He's a very proud person and is having trouble showing contrition - again - that macho crap - but, he is considered a great ballplayer, person and leader.

And, I agree, I will be surprised if he's fired. It would take a ton of outside pressure. He's a winner and that's what they want - and that includes the city.

The big hurt is a big baby. I was so glad that Chicago got rid of him. The point is that Ozzie gets along with his current players. Common sense should tell you that a person can't get along with everyone. However, Ozzie was smart enough to get rid of the problems before they became distractions (any good manager would have done the same thing). I've been a pharmacy manager for a long time. The first thing I do when I take over a store is find out who will fit in my program and who won't. I make moves as fast as I can to get a team that will work together and respect the management. As for Mariotti, he's a trouoble maker that is always looking for controversy. Well, Ozzie isn't about to put up with his garbage. The only thing that I would have done different if I was Ozzie is that I would not have apologized that that idiot!

Hitler "spoke his mind too"...you like him too?

I thought you said you like people who speak their mind?

Well isn't Mariotti doing just that?

  • fifthscale: Mariotti gets paid for starting controversy. There is a difference between speaking your mind and talking just to start trouble. Mariotti will say whatever he can to start trouble and keep people reading his article. To compare Ozzie to Hitler is idiotic!
Like I said earlier, I wish Ozzie would not have apologized.

The bottom line regarding Ozzie is.....
Ozzie knows what it takes to win, has filled the seats at Comiskey, and has the loyalty of his players.......what more can anyone ask for in a manager?

    Reductio ad absurdum.

I never "compared" Ozzie to Hitler. I simply called you out because you claim you like Ozzie because he "speaks his mind'.

I think it is more accurate to say that you like people who speak their minds....as long as you agree with the speech.

Which in reality simply means you like people who's speach you agree with. Big whoop there!!!

Thats a vast difference from admiring a guy who speaks his mind...regardless of whether or not you agree with the speech.
  • 5thscale......
You're talking like an idiot now. Sure Hitler spoke his mind, but he also killed a ton of innocent people. All Ozzie did was speak his mind. I don't like people who kill innocent people. Isn't this common sense?

Ok, I'll take back the Hitler example because I don't think you know what "reductio ad absurdum" means...otherwise you wouldn't have made that "commense sense" statement.

But it still remains, you like Ozzie because you agree with his speech.

Ozzie's trait of speaking his mind really has nothing to do with your admiration for him...because you already admitted that there are people who speaks their mind that you do not admire, Mariotti for example.

  • 5thscale:
Not only do I like Ozzie for how he handles the Sox, but also for what he has done with them (off and on the field). I also love the piss and vinegar he brings to the club. Plus, From what I have heard "of his speech", I can't disagree with him.

Where else can one get an education right smack in the middle of difference of opinion!

<< <i>Hitler "spoke his mind too"...you like him too? >>

Is that a reductio ad absurdum?

I had to look this one up - I'll have to give a another look when I'm more awake.

    I got another idea?

How about if we all just agree to disagree?
