PD qualifier?

GAI 8 1958 Orlando Cepeda
It's a pretty sweet looking card, but that yellow "fish eye" by his feet does stand out. Think this would get a PD qualifier if submitted to PSA?

Nice card. IMO you should be able to get that one through w/o a qualifier. Good centering, too.

    A PSA NM-MT 8 .............a minor printing imperfection........

A PSA NM 7: .....A minor printing blemish is acceptable...............

A PSA EX-MT 6: .......or a printing defect which does not detract from its overall appeal.

The operative words in the whole discussion are: "does not detract..."

If the "grader of death" looks at it, I would not be surprised with a 6. There are
actually THREE PDS that are easy to see on that card. The two little guys "do not
detract" that much, but the big one might be found "to detract."

If I was resubing it, I would leave it in the holder, and ask for a minimum grade.
Otherwise you could end up with a severe downgrade. (I know that the forms
say you cannot ask for a + minimum, but I would tell them to look at it, to make their
decision SOLELY about the PD, and to keep the fee if they think it will not make it.
Pretty good chance they would accomodate you on that basis; maybe not.)

Also, PSA may find the "corners" are "bad," or something else we are not even
    talking about here.

  • No way that's a 6. At worst, that's a 7 NQ
  • That's a beautiful card. Personally, I'd crack it out and send it. You want to avoid the complex mathematical formula at PSA.

GAI grade - One grade = PSA grade

Then, obviously, you'll ask for a review which will reveal 'microcreases'. For some reason microcreases show up better when a card is slabbed. A lot of people question the presence of microcreases, but after a trip to Fermi Lab in Switzerland and a day on the electron microscope, I did eventually witness microcreases at magnification of 100,000X. In fact, I had a Mantle with a whole city of miniature Mr. Mints living harmoniously in a 1/690,000 mm microcrease. There was a particularly nice IHOP and a Barnes and Noble that only sold Al's book. Stephen Hawking wanted to fumigate the card, but I saw no danger at the present time. We're keeping an eye on it to make sure Rosen's ego doesn't continue growing and absorb the card.

Also, those chatterboxes at Fermi Lab confirmed we never went to the moon. We couldn't have with the radiation from the Van Allen Belt. At the time of the landing, technology was at a point when a 20 foot wall of cement was needed to protect the astronauts. From the technical jargon, I realized that a rocket would have a hard time taking off if it weighed more than the moon itself. Even now, when the space shuttle tests altitude, the crew starts seeing each other in X-Ray form with flashcubes going off in their head and they're still five miles short of the Van Allen Belt. I imagine today's technology is a lot better so even with the best insulation available, we're still twenty-five years away from landing on the moon.

I know this might have meandered a tad off topic, but we're really talking about the same thing because Wally Moon and Moon Soleil Frye (Punky Brewster) were mentioned in the post and they have trading cards.

    Think about it.

  • Bob,

Did you see X-Men 3: Attack on Your Wallet? Famke Jansen comes back as Phoenix. The question I ask is this - Is she still Jean Grey too?

But, what I want to know...

Do you pick your feet in Poughkeepsie?

  • I never understood why Popeye Doyle had such a thing about picking feet in Poughkeepsie. What's the difference than picking your feet in Roanoke or St. Petersburg or the Vatican City?

I'm glad to see you're posting and on top of things. I knew you'd eventually surpass my mantel/mantle and send me something wet. Signed - Avid fan.

I've been on a small hiatus from card collecting. I've trimmed my collection and wouldn't mind dabbling in some exotic sets like "The Groovy Ghoulie Get Together" 1974 Refractor set. I couldn't upgrade my sets anymore without buying inferior cards in higher graded slabs so the continuing seemed futile. As we all know (That means the two of us), this hobby can really kick the living daylights out of you. It's a rollercoaster, but I do love baseball cards.

However, now I have baseball cards, more watches, a new Audi TT and all my debt paid off plus room to walk when navigating my path to the bed. I came here looking for some old friends and I'm very glad to find one. I guess once you hit a certain age, your writing skill kind of locks in, but, nevertheless, your pick-up was quite astute.

I learned a lot about the hobby over the last couple years during my absence from posting. Most of it is pure 'horror show', but nobody really wants to get their hobby stepped on and I don't blame them. However, if I can be of service, I'm happy to answer all questions. Although JLC has about 15 posts, that must be added to Scumbi and PSAtan. These monikers will go back well before most of the current posters, but there are some really great guys on this site. I look forward to conversing with them and making some new friends.

I just hope the group takes my posts with a grain of salt. I'm really not here to hurt anyone's feelings. I'm a card collector with no aspirations other than enjoying a few good finds.

I hope everything is great in your life. And, I know we'll share some great laughs until I get banned again for the thirteenth time. I hope the moderator understands I only have my cards in PSA holders and I don't really have any major gripes. There are some inequities which I'll point out from time to time, but they're not malicious. Nobody here has seen malicious from me.

Hello, all. Hope I make a solid contribution. I do know about a decent amount of sets.

    Best,

    JLC

I would say it's about as arbitrary as sipping mint juleps with Sharon Stone in Savannah?
