What ever happened to Steve Avery?

With the Braves team falling apart for the first time in 14 years......I just thought of that core group that started the team on its magnificent run. Smoltz is the only hold over. Avery was a hot prospect with a lot of potential. He was traded to the Reds? Got injured seriously. Tried several comebacks with the Braves and it did not work out. Tried with the Detroit Tigers and it still was not quite right even after a few wins. He was so young to try and get back into form, but I guess he never did get over that injury. What a pity. He was one that could have been truely a great one.

I remember him pitching on the redsox but he had nothing left. Wasn't the same pitcher.

Rick Ankiel too. He just lost all control in the playoffs and never regained it.

  • SPeaking of Rick Ankiel, there's a small blurb on him in the current S.I.- apparently he had stopped pitching due to control problems and was trying to make his way back into the majors with his offensive skills and was doing quite well until his seriously injured his knee. His is out for the rest of the year. Only 26 years old. They quote LaRussa who says something like"It just breaks your heart"

Steve Avery yet another blast from the past. I read the same article about Ankiel, I think he was attempting a comeback as an outfielder?

26 years old is not considered ancient so he still has a shot. Good luck to him.
