what's the deal with the box bottoms????

what's the deal with psa and box bottoms? will they grade them or not? i've had mixed luck.. sometimes they send them back and sometimes they grade them and in one particularly irritating case they tried to take them back from me when i attempted to reholder 2 1985 box bottoms (payton and montana), claiming they never should have been graded in the first place because they are the same as the regular 85 topps card.. it was very hard to keep my cool when i was being told those are the same cards and dismissed by a guy who was claiming to be an expert at psa. to which i still say BULLCRIPE! any fool can look at an 85 topps joe montana next to an 85 topps joe montana box bottom and tell that they are (1) a different color (2) a different photo (3) a different card number and (4) a completely different bleeping card.. yes, i agree they do look kind of similar, but give me a small break psa.. and that's the FINAL WORD? an obviously incorrect one? shall i post the photos of the 2 cards so everyone here can barbecue psa for saying they are the same card??? i had to agree to let them crack the payton out in order to escape with my montana still in a psa holder, which remains a very attractive psa 4 with a tiny little spider crease, so i was trying to get it switched to "authentic" (who wants a 4 in their modern set?) and they try to confiscate my cards???? sickening stuff.

sorry to get off on a half-rant...

topps football box bottoms? grading? thoughts? anyone?

heading out the door, but i'll check back later.. thanks guys! everyone have a great weekend! image

Got some scans? I was hoping to do some hockey box bottoms at some point, but I wasn't sure if they would grade them or not.
  • Montanafan,
That's a scary story, I've got a 1990 topps Montana box bottom on the way to PSA right now!! I know for a fact they grade them because I have a couple of Payton's in my set so I don't know what their problem is all of sudden. I know for a fact a fellow board member has had a handful graded in the past year without to many problems.

And for your 85's, there is a HUGE difference between the cards. I can't believe PSA tried to say they were the same card!!

    Sorry to hear your frustration,

    Mike
  • here's the pictures of the cards i was talking about... psa says these are the exact same card, with the "only difference" being that one is only available on the bottom of a box and the other comes out of packs. They must have made this decision without even bothering to look at the cards i think, because the differences are completely obvious.

do these really look like the same card to you?

added: and i had to let them crack out a very nice walter payton box bottom so they would allow me to keep my montana.. what kind of crap is that?

PSA is very inconsistent with grading things like box bottoms.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
