Home Buy, Sell, & Trade - U.S. Coins

What would you do with a $400-500 given these scenarios...

I posted this over in the US Coins forum ...I thought I'd post it here as well... BTW, I've decided against the harshly cleaned 1909-S VDB Lincoln

I'm hoping to get some consulting money soon and should have around $450 for coin collecting. There are a few coins I need that will be well out of my price range that will help finish off collections..1877 IHC for one...1922 Plain Lincoln for two. However, my local B&M shop has a 1909-S VDB Lincoln priced at $600...the kicker is that while it has VF20 details its been heavily cleaned [thus the discount]. Would you go for this coin or wait for one in a lower grade that hasn't been cleaned? I've generally held the opinion that original in lower grades are preferable to cleaned in higher grades, but 09-S VDBs are few and far between at my local shop. A different tack is that he also has an 1893-O Morgan in VF35-XF40 condition. He has $575 on this coin. Is this worth it? This coin also gets me one step closer to a complete Morgan date set. Lastly, I've also considered purchasing a Liberty Cap Large Cent which would be more in my price range...how much of a 1794-96 Large Cent could I realistically purchase at $450 without resorting to eBay and a roll of the proverbial dice?

Other options I've been considering...1914-D Lincoln (this would also be an online purchase and fill one of the three remaining holes in my 1909-40 Lincoln series)... fill more holes in my Morgan data/MM set...I'm a little over half way there.

Thoughts...comments...opinions...and otherwise welcome...Cheers

Definately pass on all the damaged/cleaned coins. Other than passing on the damaged coins, you are the one that really should decide where the money spent. That being said, if you decide you are interested in a 1922 No D, I have one that will be going up for auction soon. Its a PCGS VG-8 and will be going on auction soon.

If I were in that situation, I'd probably go with a strong no problem VF 1914-D Lincoln. I think it has better growth potential than a SVDB. What ever your decision, try to stay away from problem coins. Cleaned coins are crap. They're crap now, and they'll be crap twenty years from now.

Right now, I think the best bang for the buck on the SVDB is in AU. If I were going to buy one right now, it would be a AU. Unfortunatly, they're running $1100-$1275ish depending on how nice of an AU you go for. That's well over your $400-$500 budget.

I also like the 21-D Half in no problem VG-F. It's a key and is genuinly scarce and would fall in your price range.

Thanks for the advice. It's what my gut tells me but occasionally I suppose I need to be reminded image
