    Geez-

I've always been a big Phillies Phan, I was at Brett Myer's Major League debut, and I always thought he was going to be a great pitcher for the Phils. It's amazing how quickly you can lose so much respect for a guy.

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

"Myers allegedly told Knight and her friends to leave and resisted when they tried to pull him off of his wife, prompting Knight to call police"

He is a classless piece of garbage. I can't stand anyone who acts like this. I hope the Philly fans crucifiy him.
  • I never rush to judgement on these issues. Newspapers take them and run with them. Seems from the gist of the story, a ballplayer who was out with his wife wanted to go home and his wife wanted to stay at the bar they were frequenting. All the rest is pretty fuzzy. His wife bailed him out. I never condone hitting a woman but no one knows the facts, and quite possibly this wont even go to trial, just a quick hearing with probations, counsuling, and procedures to follow......

Has Myers had any "substance abuse" issues in the past?

Sometimes, the kind of conduct alleged against Myers can
spring, in part, from various types of "substance abuse."

As long as our sports-stars are recruited from our general
population, we cannot be too surprised when a percentage
of them behave just like some members of the larger
    demographic.

I don't want to rush to judgement either, but this next line sounds a little bit more than something being "pretty fuzzy":

Witnesses told police Myers dragged his wife by the hair and slapped her across the face.

There are many bars all around the Boylston / Newbury St. area where the Phillies stay; sounds like Myers hit up all of them for most of the night.

If I EVER treated my soon-to-be wife in public like that, for ANY reason, I imagine I'd get a well-deserved kick in the you know what.
  • I agree with baseballfanatic with regards to jumping to conclusions from what we read in the newspapers. Most newspapers I've seen and read will print whatever they want regardless of truth. With this said, I can't stand guys who hit women.

Myers wanted to go home, his wife wanted to stay at a bar. Quick recipe for disaster in any relationship...........

Yeah and he should be boozing it up the night before he has to pitch?? Maybe that is whay he wanted to go home??
  • Just what I mean with these types of stories. Everyone has him hitting every bar, boozing it up etc etc.
Maybe he took his wife out to dinner and she is the one with the problem? Not enough facts to pass judgement on anyone......
  • I agree how the press can blow things out of proportion. Also didn't Chuck Finley get beat up by his wife Tawny Kitaen? Men aren't the only ones who have substance abuse and domestic violence issues. Maybe she was messing around on him. Maybe he caught her with another guy. Maybe he just beat the crap out of her. Lots of maybes. Let's wait to make a descion on anything because none of us is fit to pass judgment

I agree that a situation such as this should not be prejudged by anyone . However in most states when it comes to Domestic Violence regardless of whom or what initiated it the Law Enforcement community is duty bound to not only investigate the situation but also actively stay involved to insure that there is not a reoccurrence or escalation of the situation. In New York state the victim cannot just drop charges and say forget about it because previous cases have shown that this is a invitation to disaster.

And, maybe he is a classless piece of garbage. I agree that the press is often misleading but it is pretty obvious that he assaulted his wife here. Come on. There are multiple reports. I am pretty danged sure that she wasn't beating on him. I don't know if he was "boozing it up," if she was cheating, or whatever. That doesn't matter. A person just can't act this way.

BTW - He has been charged with assault so there is some room for judgment. If we find out that the press fabricated this story, I will be stunned. He isn't anyone that most people care about to begin with.

It really surprised me that so many of you guys went with the " lets not wait to pass judgement " story. Ok, maybe she was being a belligerent fool. Maybe he wanted to leave and she was trashed and talking $hit and wouldnt go. Maybe she cheated on him with 3 of his teammates at once in the bathroom of the bar they just left.

Are any of those things a reason to drag your wife by the hair and knock her around ?

I know its a really tough and uncomfortable situation she more than likely put him in, but it still is no excuse for beating her, period.

Well, there's a crumb of poetic justice here....Myers was sent to the wolves yesterday, Fenway Park, home of some the loudest & most obnoxious people in sports, labored thru 5 horrid innings, booed continuously....What a life! But as the old saying goes, "The show must go on".....Peh!!! Bad Phillies, Bad Phillies, they could have sent a message to everyone concerned by sitting this guy down, send him back to Philly, who gives a F*** if he's your best pitcher? Forget about the rush to judgement, he beat his wife, IN PUBLIC, with witnesses, everyone knows it, he hasn't DENIED it, what is she a freakin' Ninja, cuz that's the only way I see this going any other way is if he was trying to protect himself from HER! It's s**t like this that makes me crave Dennis Rodman stories....
  • What's really telling is that the wife allegedly said: "I'm not going to let you do this to me AGAIN."

    Yikes.

Oh, and by the way...we Red Sox fans aren't that obnoxious.

<< <i>We salute the 35,564 because they delivered a message that Major League Baseball and the shameful Philadelphia Phillies were too chicken to send. They booed an alleged wife-beater, Phillies starting pitcher Brett Myers. >>

    Thanx for the link Hub.

That about sums it up. And I agree, there's no gray zone when it comes to abuse.

    Very sad moment.

Don't get me wrong as I'm with you.....There is absolutely no reason for a guy to hit a woman (except maybe in extreme self defense). My point is that I never believe what I read in the newspapers. I've read enough of these politically far left papers to know that some papers will do whatever it takes to make the story they have an even better story. All some papers care about is themself and not reporting the real news.

As a former Red Sox season ticket holder, now a cubs season ticket holder, I can tell you that Red Sox fans are obnoxious, but..thoughtful and insightful heckling are far more the norm than the "you suck"- type heckling at most heckle-zone parks (which are few). Cubs fans don't even scratch the surface of White Sox fans. White Sox fans would be horrified by the great east-coast heckling. And, much as it pains me to admit...the heckling in the bleachers at Yankee stadium during the back to back Red Sox Yankees playoff series was unparallelled (except maybe the first times Clemens came back to pitch in Fenway as a yankee - they shut off beer sales in the 5th inning in the bleachers!)

Meyers is a gutless shell of a man to punch his wife. Hopefully he will feel the wrath of more than the Fenway faithful.
