Yes.....my "OPC Trial grading" failed miserably......

image

Check it out....sorry, once again, I can't do a link!

Submission #595488 Zip is 55124

I went through 8000 cards for these! I don't even
see ANYTHING that I missed on the (5) Nolan Ryan.

Yea, yea, I know....I got a couple tens on the Action
Packed Julius Erving...they ALL should have been
10's !

Not bad. These are tough cards.

No wonder people do not submit these cards.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

I've never had good luck submitting opc with the exception of my 81-82 hockey.
  • I have only submitted three OPC's All Kirby Pucketts
1985 PSA 10 ONLY TEN around 100 Submitted
    1986 PSA 7 I knew it wasn't a 9 or 10
    1987 PSA 9 That it had a shot at a 10

That does suck, although the 1/1 Clemens may end up saving the whole deal.

While this sub may have "failed", you gained valuable knowledge as to what PSA will look for in OPC cards. Yes they are very tough, but wax is dirt cheap and you can hone your grading and really develop some great results over time. I did this with 78 Topps baseball and have actually profitted over 6 boxes without pulling a PSA 9 Murray or Molitor/Trammel because I was able to see that PSA didn't kill you on a tilt or print dots, but they hit you for rough edges, and I adjusted my subs accordingly. From what I hear, they grade OPC's the exact opposite. I haven't graded many OPC cards and I know they are tough, but if you had a good guage of what PSA was looking for, you probably only would have sent in a few Clemens, the two Ryan 9s, the Bonds 9s, and maybe a handful of others, and that would've been a great sub.

Thanks for all the comments....everyone! I have been sending in OPC's since
    PSA starting grading in 1986.

Not as many as this one. I believe that after looking back on these, I think the fact
that the 87 OPC's actually have a nice cut on them, that maybe they get more
scrunity than say the early 80's OPC's. I think they have finally become more
consistent on OPC, you just have to know what or how it is they grade. Same
way the PSE grades stamps and PCGS grades coins.

I will probably try some more commons from the group, I just wanted to get
an idea of what I should look closely at on the stars...thanks again for the
    comments all!

  • Does anybody know how tough they grade the 83 opeechees. I opened 2 boxes nuice cards and centering but all seem to have 1 rough egde. I'm hesitant to open the other 2 boxes. Kaline have you had any 83 graded or have any suggestions.I'm new to the opeechee world but if there a tough grad I might be thinking twice. I was going to put together a 78 and 83 set

I have a 1983 OPC Reggie Jackson PSA 10. Its the only one, but shows that they will give that grade. I also have several other years in 9s and 10s, some with rough cuts. I think they realize the rough cut is a common occurence in these cards.

Agreed, and it looks like the 9's outnumber the 8's. You should be able to at least recover your costs, I would think.

    Sounds like you should resubmit.

GO MARLINS! Home of the best fans in baseball!!

I have not graded that many 1983's. They seem to come fairly nice,
but too many of the ones I have seen had a really bad tilt cut to them.

Don't know if this helps or not.

  • Considering what I've seen with 1987 OPCs, you did pretty great pulling those 9s!!!
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

Looking for Al Hrabosky and any OPC Dave Campbells (the ESPN guy)

Now I am worried, I have a submission in with these 86 OPC.

    5 Base O Pee Chee 1986 98 Roger Clemens
    1 Base O Pee Chee 1986 199 Dennis Eckersley
    2 Base O Pee Chee 1986 185 Rollie Fingers
    1 Base O Pee Chee 1986 254 Ozzie Guillen
    1 Base O Pee Chee 1986 10 Tony Gwynn
    1 Base O Pee Chee 1986 394 Reggie Jackson
    1 Base O Pee Chee 1986 180 Don Mattingly
    1 Base O Pee Chee 1986 267 Paul Molitor
    1 Base O Pee Chee 1986 197 Dale Murphy
    2 Base O Pee Chee 1986 100 Nolan ryan
    1 Base O Pee Chee 1986 390 Tom Seaver
    3 Base O Pee Chee 1986 297 Ozzie Smith

I took a lot of time picking these and rejected the cards with the most minor flaws. Looks like about 6 weeks of anticipation with minimal hope of a payoff. Nice job on the Clemens.
