Ebay auction question........authentic??

Well, as you might imagine, this board has made me very skeptical about every auction I come across. Let's just say you all have increased my paranoia.

Anyway, I came across the following auction........
Robinson rookie

Please take a look and let me know what you think. The seller has a VERY low feedback and the picture of the card looks fishy. At first I thought the white on the right side of the front might have been from the flash of a camera, but if you look at the picture on the back, the same flash/whiteness is now on the left.

Anything look wrong with the slab? What's your opinion? I'm sure whether it's legit or not this auction will end at a price that is a lot to me, so any opinion would be appreciated.

thanks, shawn

  • I think it certainly looks like the slab has been opened. When I crack out cards with a knife, mine look MUCH cleaner.

    Past auctions as seller:

    Disney movies
    Xbox games
    Beer bottle
    Nintendo games
    Ball cap
    Zippo lighter

I wouldn't risk it. This is one of those auctions that you can't help but be a little less than sympathetic to the buyer.

Thanks Josh, all I needed to hear to steer clear of this one.

  • I would not risk it either especially since the seller made a point in the auction that he will not accept returns (almost like he was setting up his defense). However, if it's true that this seller is selling a re-slabbed card, I can't understand why he would accept paypal. I understand that paypal won't back the buyer up, but his credit card company will.

    SMR = $235.00

    Hard to say.

    The frosty spots on the slab could be pry marks;
    maybe not.

Seller looks ok. 2002. Not much viewable record of selling
cards. Recent record of selling other stuff.

    PayPal accepted.

You might ask the seller what the frosties/scuffs are.

Kind of a drab looking card. Bottom right corner soft?

If you could hold it in your hand, you would know.
Since you cannot, it is 50/50.

    Card looks OK.

    Cert # checks out.

Right side of holder looks like someone took a screw driver to it.

Seller's feedback and track record for vintage cards: nil.

  • yeah i say skip it.. another will come along soon enough with a seller that you don't feel uneasy about.
  • can't really tell. better if scanned.

I did have some PSA slabs that have some clouds on the edge and I submitted them myself. Mostly in the middle. I got 2 basketball cards graded by psa with smoke/clouds around the edge of the case like the back photo of that card. I also submitted them myself. If I looked closely at an angle, the middle part is clear and you could tell it has not been opened. I also noticed some of my psa graded cards the edge are more frosted than the others. I wish psa would make improvements on their case. i think it's very easy to tamper their it.

    Definitely a rip-off. I recommend not bidding.

It's not the flash from the carmera that makes the lower edge look 'funny'.

There's really nothing to see here at all folks ... just keep moving and return to your homes ...

  • the card also has a small stain on the back on the upper edge.. that case has been popped IMO
  • I've been told by more than one dealer that cards with cert#'s "0X0...." should be reviewed carefully. I guess there is a belief that these were submissions made in the early days of PSA and that the standards have become more stringent. Not sure if this is something addressed anywhere else in these forums but I have avoided these cert#s for the most part unless the scan is impeccable.

The whole "0x....." cert number stuff is nonsense. I just had an order graded and the cert numbers start with 07xxxxxx.
  • interesting. could it be that older cards graded in that series are the problem? not sure how one would know which were graded when, though.

  • or could it be that big dealers asked PSA to start using that series again to help them sell their "0X0" series cards?
