1984 Topps Baseball 90 card submission results

I bought a 3-box rack case from BBCE a few months ago and took my time going through all the cards (not just stars) for high quality cards to submit. Here's the results:

Congrats!! Thats a boat load of 10s. I dont know from experience but, it seems like alot of people here do well with unopened material from BBCE.

    Sweet!

    Great eye...congratulations!

thanx for sharing - how about a scan of the Palmer when you get them back.

  • Hey all:

I was pretty happy with the grades, but honestly, with the exception of some Mets, Tigers and these stars (#1 Carlton, #300 Rose, and #470 Ryan), all of the other cards were PSA 10 material. That being said, I still can't complain about getting 10s on exactly 1/3 of the cards (30 out of 90). The case had a good number of very nice cards, but no nice Mattinglys. Oh well, I can't expect too much from 22 year old product.

    Mike:

I'll post a scan of one of the Palmer 10s to this thread after I receive the package back from PSA. For some reason, all the Palmers were beautiful in this case and I was hard pressed to pick the 3 best to submit. I'm honestly shocked that the third one on my invoce didn't get a 10 also. I'm going to keep one of them, but one of the 10s and the 9 will probably find their way to ebay.

None of this bodes well. On a dangerous (and, ultimately, probably expensive) impulse I submitted 200 star cards from the 1990's this last week. They're all clean, with no corner or surface wear (blah blah blah), but if the grades that are coming in are any indication of how mine are going to turn out I'm bound to be at least a little disappointed. In any case there's nothing more demoralizing then being actively FEARING the day that your grades are released, and that's the situation I feel like I'm beginning to crawl into.

Which gets me to wonderin': Is it even possible, from say a 100 card submission, to get 50 or 60 or 90 PSA 10's? Of course it's technically possible, but is it psychologically (if that's the right word) possible for a grader to take a large submission and, even if they're more than worthy, hang a 10 on every card (or a very high percentage of the cards)? Or is the grading process set up to take the "psychologicalness" out of the equation?

That's a great point. What's the highest percentage anybody has ever received as 10's? For me, I would say 10%. However, I am no expert. What about you experts? What's the highest percentage of 10's received back on a modern sub?

There was an approximate 80-card submission a few weeks ago (of my beloved '93s) and 76 cards came back PSA 10. This came from a buddy of mine extrapolitating the population report.

I once got 48% 10s on a submission of 1988 Star Glossy Mike Schmidt cards I sent in. It was a 42 card submission. I was definitely not expecting all 10s, and was pleasantly surprised by the results.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Well, we're going to find out, since for the first time in the years I've been submitting I can honestly say that not a single one of the cards I submitted was a dog. There are no sliders in these 200 cards-- none. You wouldn't believe the quality of some of the cards I rejected. If this bunch comes back with a bad 10 to 9 ratio I'll probably never submit another low dollar post-1980 card for the rest of my life.

I hit 50% 10's on my last batch of 1986 Topps, and if this lot doesn't come back better than that I will not be happy.
