Krugerrand Questions

Are fakes in the marketplace?
Are there any reliable ways to tell the real thing?
Thanks from a lightsider!

I'm sure there are fakes, although I've never seen one - any gold coin will pick up a few counterfeits, though.

Best test for the K-rand would be weight, I would imagine. I wouldn't think people would counterfeit it with gold, since they trade for bullion.
  • I saw a gold plated base metal one ounce Krugerrand once.

It was horrible and very obviously a counterfeit.

I would check weight. I would try to buy from a reputable source.

I would seriously doubt anyone would counterfeit a Krugerrand with real gold (like they do some numismatic bullion coins) because the markup over spot is very minimal with Krugerrands.
There's nothing in the rule book that says an elephant can't pitch.
