Mr. Mint and 2 rack cases......... superman

I know it sounds stupid but if anyone has the 6/30 issue of SCD look in the inside page where Mr.Mint is boasting that he bought 2 sealed rack cases of 1976 baseball. He is holding them up like they are empty cases. Both together would strain a person more than that. The tape doesnt look secure at the top either. Could this be a posed picture? I know , who even cares....

OK, I'll bite....Hopefully, I speak for the Immoral Majority here when I say that you would be hard-pressed to find anyone on these boards who gives the least bit of a cr*p about what Mr Mint does.....And yes, he is a poserimage

    A quote from Mr. Mint...

"I don't collect baseball cards. I don't collect baseball memorabilia. I don't have one item in my collection. I liken it to the shoemaker who doesn't keep shoes and the baker who doesn't keep bread."

Nothing wrong with a buy&flip mentality, but man, he doesn't even collect. I wonder if he likes the sport.

Heh. I showed a non-card collector friend of mine a picture of Mr Mint (one where he's holding up money and cards with that mad gleem in his eye and that "Joker" smile), and he said "Yup. Only CRAZY people are into that stuff."

Truthfully, it looks like the box on the top doesn't even have a lid. Definately a pose. I bet the packs were already on their way to GAI for grading. image

and to carry the moniker "From the Alan "Mr. Mint" unopened rack case find"............
  • mr mint's quote echoes throughout the card shops ahd living rooms of most sellers. once youve reached the point where your hobby becomes your livelihood (i.e. how you make a living), you really no longer become a collector. just my own philosophy
  • There was a great Mr. Mint post a la Edgar Allan Poe made years ago. It was like the Cask of the Amontillado I wonder if someone could find it and link it. I laughed my a$$ off... and then had to have it surgically put on again.

    For those without SCD.

It almost looks like he's ready to break into some kind of "levitation" act! I guess "Big Al" is in better shape than I thought!

Also, and disappointing - SCD was at 60 pages! My local "Welcome Home" free newspaper was bigger than that!

    Flip-ping Cha-Ching!
  • He apparently spends a lot of time in the livingrooms of former dimestore owners from the fifties and sixties thumbing through their overstock. Seriously, everytime I read about him, some former drugstore owner has invited him over to sell him pristine unopened packs.

It's like some people still haven't got the word that 50s baseball cards are worth money. Unbelievable.

The owner of a copy machine and antique business in days gone by.........

Altho we all make fun of the guy.

And he can look kind of egotistic, at times.

But, IMO, he's a very intelligent and savvy business guy who is very successful in the hobby.

His first book is kind of fun to read and you can get a used copy from Barnes and Nobel used on-line cheap I would guess.

I remember how he talked about his first "buy." He borrowed money from everyone including his mother-in-law I believe and drove home afterward with all kinds of trepidation about how much he had just spent! I believe it was close to 100K? Well, he did a quick flip and made way more money than he did with copy machines and was hooked - rest is history.

  • I don't care for him personally, but I will give him credit he has done only what so many of us hope to do in this hobby. Sure I collect, but I also look to make money to build my own collection. His books are also good reads.

I guess all of his self promotion is what gets him the finds. I am not sure if he pays a fair price or not, but If I had a cache of old baseball cards I know I would contact several buyers and sell to the best offer. Most people who sell to him must just see his picture in SMR with a big wad of money and deside thats their buyer. Does he buy smaller collections at shows? I was thinking someone had an experience with a 50's or 60's set he low balled them on? The same thing goes on in my collecting circle, one guy who works at a car dealership will buy your collection or a big item any time and pay in cash. You may not get ebay money but people must need it quick and go to him. He also sells cheap on the flip too though.
  • Well if someone needs the money right then who is more likely to get the purchase. The person who offers 500 dollars and has cash in hand or the one who offers 750, but has to write a check or has to go to the bank??

Do you really think that he sent off all those racks to get graded? I would have thought that he would have sold them on his new ads in SCD. Can anyone guess what a rack case of 1976 is worth sealed? My guess would be 8000.00+. I would have thought is was worth more money sealed than opened>

Don't know if Al would bother to grade '76 Racks....To him that's New Stuff

Typical Conversation with Al Rosen if you are trying to sell him something:

Seller: Hi Al, I'm interested in selling these two 1976 Topps Rack Cases
Al: Ah, ha, ha, ha! I've got 200 of those in my warehouse! Ah, ha, ha, ha!
Seller: Ok, so how much would you pay?
Al: Lemme make a phone call........
