A Pat on The Back To Kit Young Cards

I bought a raw HOW #288 from Kit Young's Ebay store. Being the last card in the set, it is notoriously difficult to find in decent condition. The card has a pop of 3 in PSA5 with none higher. The card was described as EX and the price was right ($37.95 BIN) so I bought it, expecting the card to grade out at a 3 or 4. Sent it to PSA and it got graded as a PSA5 - the fourth one graded at that level (Still none higher).
I read so many threads about scam sellers that I thought it would be a nice change of pace to acknowledge a seller who gets it right.

  • Well I was looking at some of the other raw HOW cards he has up for sale. Are you saying he overgrades his raw cards and thought the HOW#288 was a lower grade than EX? That would be very disappointing. Based on this experience I was getting ready to buy quite a few more from Kit Young.

My comment was more directed at Kit's much discussed grading sense for ball cards. Many old school dealers don't have the same respect for NS cards as they do for ball cards. By all means, purchase what you want from Kit.

    Congrats on your card.

My Kit Young experiences have been more in line with Mark's...

  • Hmm - then it might be a good strategy to search out old time sports card dealers offering to sell NS cards. I'm going to buy a few more from Kit - I'll let you know how I make out

From my experience I think they made a mistake, to your advantage. Congrats!
I must say though, they are good with returns. Once I had a few grossly overgraded cards that I returned I started ordering over the phone and they will tell you the accurate grade, once you explain you're going by PSA standards. And Kit has always been very friendly at shows.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

Wow, you have to let somebody know ahead of time that you don't want to get screwed over? His grading standards should always be the same whether he's talking to a seasoned PSA veteran or a newbie in the hobby.

The official grading standards are big dealer in the 80's. Talk to an employee that is familiar with grading and you get the full details. "Do you think it will come back a 7?" "No, I don't think you're going to want this one, but you will want that one"
Fair enough for me. They're very good with returns as well.

Oh, ok. Sounds reasonable. I was assuming it was the same guy changing his opinion of the grade based on your knowledge of cards. It would be nice though that if a big dealer calls something NM, that it would come back a 7, 7st, 7oc, etc. PSA has helped put many of us on the same page and every big dealer knows that page. I couldn't list a card as NM if I knew it would come back a PSA 5 or a slider 6. If I call something NM in an auction, I'm saying that it would most likely get a 7 based on my experience. Same as if I call something Nmmt or Mint. I know I take a beating sometimes on my closing price because buyers always assume a grade or two less from ebay but I get many positives like "cards better than described" and stuff like that. People should care about their reputation and it sounds like many people already have an opinion of Kit Young cards so it's too late now.

What gets me is the big dealer that lists cards as Ex and they are actually graded PSA 3. His reasoning? "I know more about grading than they do, and I say it's ExMt (or whatever)" Same guy who thinks you only downgrade 2 grades for trimming, and paper loss on the reverse doesn't matter since you only look at the front of the card.

I agree with Anthony. You've got guys selling cards today who actually helped define grading standards before PSA. It's a power struggle now; the old time dealers are not about to give in to these johnny-come-lately's....it's really a major coup for us that they will acknowledge third party grading standards at all. Slabbed cards are a commodity, not a service to them. Used to be you'd ask an old time dealer if PSA would agree with their grading scale and they'd say who the f---- cares what some 3rd party grader thinks??? I've been doing this since before they were nothing more than a sparkle in some corporation's eye!!

  • Gee. I have learned more about Kit Young in the last few days then I ever wanted to know. First time I dealt with the man. Anyway a picture of the HOW #288 in PSA5 has been posted in my Registry Set - sorry I don't know how to post a link. The card would have gotten a higher grade but with an OC qualifier. I requested NO QUALIFIERS when I submitted the card.
