Should I sell empty wax boxes ?

I have a couple of wax boxes I just opened; 84 Donruss and 83 Topps. Both are in great condition, The 84 Donruss still has the empty wax packs in it, also in good shape. Should I try to sell these things on E-bay ? I dont really want them, but I hate to throw them away. I also hate to promote a possible buyer from using them to reseal packs. Should I or Shouldnt I ?? What would be the best way to pack them for shipping if I did decide to sell ??

I always sell them. They are most easily sold
in person, and they seldom bring much $.

The way to ship them is to flatten them. Often,
    this requires making a "non-factory" tab-tare on
the bottom-center; that makes it impossible to use
the box to defraud most buyers.

Most people just like the boxes for the "art" work.

Thanks for the info, I thought about breaking them down as you suggested, and probably will have to. I was going to put them in my E-bay Store for a buck or two.

The ill-willed pack sorter, who could use it as a vehicle to pass off a bunch of junk packs is out there. I don't sell boxes for this reason. I also don't sell wrappers for their potential misuse either. my $.02.

I agree with Colle - more bad than good can come from selling an empty box with the wax wrappers.

Heck, I would put them away and take them out in about 30 yrs - it will be a real treat!

If you trade them or sell them to a friend or respected board member, then they are definately fun items to exchange.

I've followed a few 84D empty wax boxes on ebay and they bring little, if any, coin. The small amount of money you might make pales in comparison to some bozo using the box/wrappers for unethical means (of which has been stated) and having some unsuspecting soul ripped off.

Once the bottom-center tabs are cut, the boxes are useless
for purposes of fraud. Almost anybody would know to look
at the bottom of the box to see if it had been taken apart.

On the other hand, the point may be that on eBay, the
buyer does not get a chance to look at the bottom first.

All of my boxes would still look nice, if the bottoms were
completely removed or cut on three sides. I display
    them for sale in 8 1/2 x 11 sheet-protectors, or if they
are too big I use two-gallon freezer zips.

There is a market for them, but their value is usually
pretty tiny. Non-sports boxes are much more saleable
    than sports, in my experience.

  • I agree with the opinion of not selling them. The bad out weights the good.

Ok, I have decided not to sell them on the bay. If anyone wants them I will let you have them for the price of shipping, if not they are going in my attic. Thanks !

These boxes have pretty low value so probably not a big deal. However, where do you draw the line between helping the common good (by throwing away these empty boxes) and helping yourself!? Let's say a box has a net value of $10. One wouldn't normally throw away a ten dollar bill!? Slightly different but 3 years ago my Rolex was stolen. I had the box, warranty, tags, etc.... I heard these ancilary items have value and listed on Ebay. Sold for $225 or $250. Now this is slightly different as it could have been a legitimate Rolex owner who wanted the little leather Rolex pillow to store his Rolex on or it could have been a con-man selling fakes. I truly hadn't thought of it until the auction was rolling and someone pointed out why they have such value. I am naive I suppose. Anyway, my point is there is a line between common good and helping yourself. Everybody draws the line at a different place. The idea of selling an empty box doesn't bother me but empty box with 36 empty wrappers does cause me concern! However, that's why I try to buy unopened material (and Rolexs) from reputable dealers!

I understand Larry, I could have sold without the wrapper or with , but for now I think I will hold them both and forget about them. Probably until I go way back into the attic. I noticed where several boxes from the late 60's and early 70's were bringing $30 to $40 bucks on E-bay. I figured Im not realy losing anything by just holding on to them.

I got this one from the BBCKid around 1993.

I know that Griffins collects boxes and packs.

I still say - put it away - most have probably thrown them away so in 50 yrs. it may be scarce. A legacy for the kids?

With this type of reasoning none should sell a well centered exmt card because someone could cut it and claim it were mt.

I have a 1961 Fleer FB wax box and all the wrappers. a 1972 Topps FB wax box and all the wrappers. Bunch of empty wrappers from the 60's and a box full of wrappers from the late 70's to early 80's. Probably a thousand or more in $$$ and eveytime I think about selling them, a thread like this pops up and I erase the thought from my mind.

    Oh well.
