Is it just me or is it the more we look at a raw vintage cards they all begin to look trimmed?

  • Is that why they're not graded? Or is it that the only ones that arn't graded are the really beat up ones?

  • There are some out there, but I've been fortunate not to run into too many. I try to buy from reputable people. Just recently, though, I bought a '61 common Yankee that appeared to be mint. I sent it in hoping for a 9 or at least a very high end 8. It came back as evidence of trimming. I was caught off-guard. The card was a full 3 1/2 by 2 1/2 inches. It was even a hair over! PSA is really good at spotting it. I don't know what strikes a person to make a beautiful vintage card worthless....

  • Greed makes them trim cards........... I was fortunate enough to pick up a bunch of sweet 1950 Bowman Raw cards from a local vintage dealer for $11 bucks each. He does not deal in graded cards. Out of the 50 or so cards I purchased I've sent in 8 of them for grading and four came back as 6's (which I expected) and 4 came back as 8's (which I also expected). The reaminder of them I feel are 6's, 7's, and a few eights and the kicker is I have one that I really think has a shot at a nine but it does have the slightest tilt. He told me I cherry picked him. There are a few good guys out there still.
  • Yes, there are still a few good guys out there and they are the ones who get my money!

  • 71s are doctored quite a bit. I just bought about 500 raw on ebay from a non dealer who claimed to be the original owner. He had some other cards for sale along with some misc. record albums, etc. He said he had them in the garage for 30 years. His story looked pretty convincing. His whole auction presence really didn't have the hobby feel to it. I bought the cards and ended up with some very nice undoctored 71s.

There still is alot of stuff out there that hasn't filtered into the hobby, THAT is the stuff to get.
