whats your biggest bidding blunder

i always use a snipe sevice for placing bids on ebay. just by chance, recently i caught a big mistake i made. i caught it before the bid went in so i was able to correct my mistake. anybody here have stories of bidding blunders which they didnt catch in time?

I wanted to bid $10.00 on a parkie reprint of Barilkos winning goal, boy was I shocked when I saw that I bid $1000 about a minute before the auctions end image

Luckily I only had to pay around $11 bucks. And by the way, I wouldn't have even bid on a reprint but I was making a poster for one of our minor hockey tournaments image
  • I once used a comma instead of a period and wound up bidding 8,990.00 for a "Brave Little Toaster" tape. Good thing no one else was in at 8,500.00...............

On more than one occasion (spread out over a 10 year period), i made the stupid decision to "bookmark" a listing in a Mastro auction by bidding on it rather than adding it to my watchlist. I thought the hammer price would be much higher than my bid so i thought i was safe. Was i ever wrong....

The first blunder resulted in my winning a lot that was cost a few hundred dollars (if i recall correctly) --- not too painful of a hit. The second blunder resulted in my winning (perhaps i should say LOSING!) a lot that had an extra zero added to it. Boy, did i ever want to crawl under a rock and change my middle name to Stupid. Fortunately, i was able to unload the 2nd blunder and not lose any money.
  • if anyone ever made a bigger bluner then this i feel really sorry for ya!

1994 - Greg Manning Auctions at the National.

I bid on about 8 lots - bit the "minimum" on all of them - figured I might get 1?

Got them ALL!!! They call me with a bill for $5400!!!

    My wife went ballistic!

Be careful what you wish for!

    Mike-
Here's what you tell M. next time:

    1. I was bidding for some friends that weren't registered
    2. These are upgrades, I'll sell the old ones for more than the better ones cost
    3. Boy, were these a steal!
    4. I only need part of this lot, I"ll make it back on the balance
    5. How much do your shoes appreciate every year?
    6. (Borrowed from Ghostbusters) C'mon honey, EVERYONE has 3 mortgages these days!

My worst bidding mistake was coming home after an especially good Friday nite dinner, and finding Mastro still going. Somehow the Tequilla in me bid and won '54, '55 Bowman sets, and '53, '58 Topps sets, plus a couple of other small things that at the time seemed to be going way too low. Friends don't let friends drink and bid.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

yikes.. thats horrible.. but the odds are it was a reprint anyway.. are you 100% sure it was a legit Amazing Fantasy #15?..

it was much more valuable even in 1993 than a Webber auto wasnt it?..

happily, I don't have any blunders I completely regret, except bidding $75 on a LeAnn Tweeden autograph card for my fans of the game set and winning it at $73.

They go for $16 right now.

Tomorrow, I'm gonna ask Mary what went thru her head that day. I PROMISE you she remembers it like yesterday!

    image

I would like to find the receipt - it's buried somewhere - I have shown this card often - I think I paid somewhere between 550 and 750$ for this card - I promise it will bring a lot more money today Mary!

Also got a great buy on this one - paid 450$ - min. bid again:

If it'll make the wife happy Mike, I'll give you your costs back on those two cards, plus a little something extra to take her to dinner! Like you said, let's see her shoes appreciate like that! Gorgeous cards!
