49 Down--1964 Philadelphia Football Completed in PSA 8 or Better

Thanks to my friend Frank Evanov(Mantlefan), I am now complete in PSA 8 or better on my 49th set--1964 Philadelphia.

The day before my party, Frank e-mailed me and said #49 was done--he had submitted card #2 Tom Gilburg to PSA and bingo it came back an 8. Two weeks prior to this, he brought the number of cards I needed to one by finding Ron Bull for me in psa 8. What can you say about a collector like Frank who works feverishly to help my sets and then refuses to take any money at all for the cards.

What a guy!

I had most of this set raw and in high grade so this one started out with a pretty good set rating--within short order Brian and I got it down to five cards. Wayne Walker and Doug Atkins were two of the other final five.

This set consists of 56 psa 9s and 142 psa 8s and ranks 4th on the registry with a 8.26 set rating bebind the Evil Empire(who bought Frank's set), JoeN and that other legendary football collector from Long Island FabFrank. I plan to let the set rest at this level.

This represents the 16th set in PSA 8 or better I have completed since year-end 2005.

My goal continues to be over 100 vintage sets in psa 8 or better with an interim goal of 50 by year-end 2006. I have a shot at completing the 50th in the next couple of days. We'll see.

    ArnyVVee,

Believe me--none of them are easy and it is going to get harder and harder as I get into the second 50. Stepping up to buy the 52 Pafko or the 52 Mantle or the 52 Bowman Large Lansford or the 34 Diamond Star Grove in psa 8 if and when they become available will be a real test.

Outstanding Jim! I have always liked that set, clean design with many HOFers.

Good luck on the other possibility!
  • Congrats Jim. You're almost halfway to your goal. Just getting this far makes you a Hall of Famer. What happens when you achieve your goal of 100 sets PSA 8 or better? Card Collecting Godhood?image

When those really hard cards become available, it should be no test at all. Let the Benjamins fly and don't look back.image

Knowing Jim, he'll build a new room and go for 200 sets.

    Thanks guys.

FabFrank--"card collecting Godhood"--I like the sound of that.....but it will be tough to get to 100.

    Mantlefan,

    Another card room--great idea--.

Actually I will just one by one move my 80s sets up to my son's bedroom to make room for the vintage. I should have included my son's bedroom last Sunday for a modern-card tour.

  • Jim -

I was looking at the 1948 leaf boxing and noticed there are 7 or 8 collectors all at 98% and all are missing card #50 Graziano. Usually someone hits 100%, is this the Wagner of the set! Is there a story here!

    Jim-

Congratulations on another set. I'm kicking myself for missing your get together last weekend, but on the plus side my girlfriend and I had a great weekend in DC on vacation.

Looking forward to your next set!

    ChrisC,

The Graziano is a huge rarity. I believe the total pop is two and the highest graded might be a psa 4 or 5. While there are 50 or more Wagnrs known to exist, I would doubt that can be said about the Graziano.

    Tom,

We missed you. Wish you were there but its just a stones throw away. Let me know if you want to stop by on Saturday.

  • congratulations on yet another accomplishment jim.... it speaks very well of you and mr. evanov that you two work together and help each other to achieve your goals, rather than competing with each other... it's a refreshing change from the usual bashing/competing that goes on...
