I thought the coin was older than this, say 300 BC.

Yes, it is a posthumous issue in the name of Alexander the Great from the Mesembria mint. They were struck very late after his reign.

Just curious. How do coins over 2,000 years old survive in near mint state? Were they kept in some kind of container or cloth? A coin buried in the earth couldn't possibly keep its luster and details, or could it? I'm in awe.

I made it in my basement last month.

    image Just kidding.

Most likely it was kept in some sort of vessel, or container and probably discovered in that. But then again, I really have no idea. I would think it was a hefty sum of money so they may not have circulated much.

High grade coins generally come from hoards. Those towards the center of the hoard are more protected from corrosion and crystallization than those on the edges. None come out of the ground looking like this coin does. They all have to undergo some sort of cleaning/conservation process.

  • Had this been from the same mind, closer to his reign - it would have been worth more. 175-75 BC seems to be more commonly found in hordes along with those Alexander the Great's from the Odessos mint.

It's a nice coin, is it for sale?
