OK- guys I am 29 years old and am a real estate agent now. I only collect cards for fun and can tell you what these guys are doing just by being around them for about 4 years at all the big shows-2000-2004(sportsfest, sun times, san fran, nationals).
the first time I met these guys I was setting up at the Nashville Tri star show
I was selling raw SP authentic rookies(that were 8's at best) Griese, Moss James, McNabb
Keep in mind I sent ANYTHING in that should PSA 9!
I will not name names but you guys know who!
one guy came by my booth and measured the cards and bought them all for a VERY NICE PRICE!
I thought nothing of it at the time other than he must have a buyer for raw
I actually did not realize HOW AND WHAT they were doing for a few years later(2005).
First, they try to dump to us dealers for a good discount.
For example I buy two 87 fleer bonds BGS 9.5's for 1000 a piece even though they sell for 1300 a piece on ebay.
I buy a MJ psa 10 for 6500 when it sells for 7500
He always wanted to know if I was going to put it on ebay? (wonder why? now I know) I never bought serial # high dollar stuff just key rookie high grade stuff(he wanted to know were it was going though).
The thing that stopped me from doing business with these scumbags is a funny story. I bought a PSA MJ 10 rookie for 6500.00 he insisted I send payment (even though I was flying to San fran in less than a week). I send it he tells me later I will deliver card at san fran- I get to san fran he blows me off until the last day of the show and I catch him at the BGS booth trying to get my PSA 10 MJ ROOKIE crossed to a BGS 9.5
at the time a PSA 10 was about a 7500.00 card and a BGS 9.5 was about 12K
my item PAID IN FULL was trying to be crossed over(it didnt cross so he gave it to me at the BGS booth). I asked him what would he have done if it crossed over? he would have given me my money back + a little!
I ought to tell you the scum bags name!
I jus thought these guys had better eyes than me. I thought they got better grades than me for submitting 500 or more at a time.
I always thought what is the difference between a 9 or 10? Who you know!
I want to make clear NONE OF THESE GUYS EVER admitted doing this I just got tidbits over the years here and there and realized what these guys were doing after I was long gone from the business.
You guys have been blamming PSA and BGS which is WRONG WRONG WRONG IMHO!
What these guys do IMHO is they buy a LASER CUTTER for HUGE MONEY! It cuts the card THE SAME WAY IT IS CUT AT THE FACTORY so if they find cards that are a tad bigger they can trim it and it still fits the dimension for minimum size requirement.
They get greedy and try to trim stuff that is too small and that is why you see the evidence of trimming on some submissions.
I have seen things you would NOT BELIEVE AT THESE SHOWS!
For example BGS kicking back and ENITRE 40 card submission for evidence of trimming from one of the little scumbags.
I actually think I have seen the kid on the WORLD SERIES OF POKER(but could be wrong).
The last show I ever did(I had twin boys and had to make a good living) was the Chicago Sportsfest and it was funny how after about 5 years of seeing these guys 4 or 5 times a year. You could put it all together. I could have gotten in on it I am certain- hey they liked me I would buy 5K-10K a month, I would play ball with these guys after the shows, hang out etc.
What the deal really was is that I was played by them. I bought there stuff thinking they were better than me at getting it graded but they werent they just were better at cheating the system. I thought they had more cash to invest in set cases etc.
This is just my opinion from buying and selling at the big shows for a few years.
I could be wrong on some of my assumptions BUT I KNOW FOR A FACT from first hand experince some of the guys you talk of will do whatever they can to make as much $ as possible and screw us all in the process.
The reason I shared this with you is that I love collecting cards for fun and this board has been awesome to me since I got back into it a few months ago(building a heritage set) and I thought I would at least share what I knew first hand. I have TONS AND TONS OF STORIES that you would not believe the sheer #s of BGS 9.5's etc. recieved and the more I bought from him the cheaper the price got. I am blessed I got out of selling cards for a living. It was always hard to find the big deals for me. Most people have 87 topps and think they are worth a fortune. I had a few big hits buying collections but few and far between.
Anybody who sends me a letter from their lawyer- can forget about me changing ANYTHING in my story.
My wife is an attorney and I made sure I told what I KNOW AS FACT and WHAT IS MY OPINION so do not bother with some BS letter to me!

I appreciate the spirit of your post but...
1. You haven't told us anything we don't already know.
2. If you don't name the individual...
then your thread is moot. You might as well be telling me the sky is falling.

<< <i>I found the opening post very difficult to read. I was waiting for the big "clincher" but was disappointed in the end, much like watching the movie Wolf Creek. >>
I guess I have alot more to say but am a little cautious on what I say and who I expose!
This person that screwed in my san fran lets just say he would take a card say AI lucky 13 and there would be maybe 3 bgs 9.5's graded
booking at 500.00 then all of a sudden he would get 100 graded 95% 9.5's and sell them to dealers for 75.00 a piece if you would buy 10 and eventually the card would drop in price big time on ebay. I would guess a AI know sells for 30-40 on ebay all because of this one guy who screwed the 3 legit BGS 9.5's!
Another example was the Tiger UD rookie(bgs 9.5 )- that card was selling for 500.00 at the Cleveland national and they drove it down quick!
I was just letting everybody on here know their paranoid thoughts are not paranoid but correct!
You think they have gotten to the 93 refractors (your set) yet? I bet the pops have went crazy at some point in time in the past few years but I could be wrong.

I'm having trouble following this...
Who is AI Lucky 13? A hypothetical person?
Without giving a specific account of a card - who, what, where, when and how - you are just giving generalizations and it has very little teeth...
Again, thanx for the heads up - but it's like you're telling me that eventually I will be hit by a truck loaded with overgraded - trimmed - AI Lucky 13s?
mike
there would be very few(percentage wise) graded 9.5
then he would blow it up with 50-100 BGS 9.5's in one submission
He would sell to us cheap(we at the time thought what a deal) but we were just peddling his trimmed garbage!
The card would go from 400.00 to 75.00 in a matter of about a month on ebay!

Now you're talking - sorry for not realizing you were talking about a specific AI card.
I wouldn't be happy if that happened to me - that's for sure.

anything expensive that was printed after 1965?

why must scumbags ruin our hobby????!?!!?!? it's very frustrating to hear things like this and know that (a) it's probably true and (b) they'll probably get away with it.. someone should alert the FBI.

<< <i>IMHO- the laser cutter is used on oversized SP authentic rookies with nicked corners from my experience with the doctors. If you remembering pulling the 98 sp rookies THEY WERE OVERSIZED but usually damaged slightly by being on the back of the pack. I suppose that explains why every 2000 SP Authentic rookie I've ever submitted to PSA comes back in one of those ugly, condom holders rather than the regular slabs. I suppose that's a good sign though. Anyway, I agree that a lot scammers out there are probably trimming these cards. Check out these pics from a BGS scandal last year. A instance where having the card #'d from the factory really came in handy.

do you have ths sub grades on the 8.5?
<< <i>do you have ths sub grades on the 8.5? >>
Nah, I can't seem to find the original thread that had this topic. It referenced another link that was over at the Beckett forum so they may have already deleted it (for obvious reason). The person who caught this was the original owner of the 8.5. He was shocked (and very PO'd) when he stumbled across the same card being sold as a 9.5. A good thing he happened to save a scan of the 8.5 before he sold it.
It's not just a modern thing though.
I can guarantee you that the subs on the original 8.5
had subs of 10 cen/8.5 edges/8.5 or 8 corners/9 surface.
You can see the 2 bottom dull corners on the orginal 8.5s
and more laces on Brady's shoes. You see less laces on the
new 9.5, and those 2 bottom corners are now razor sharp.
There are buyers who feast on BGS 8.5 with subs mentioned above.
As long as the cen is at least 9.5 and the surface is a 9, the other 2 subs for corners & edges don't matter. There will be bidding wars on those cards.
You'll see the same wars for well centered high dollar vintage 5's, 6's, and 7's...with a handful of submitters winning a great deal of them.
<< <i>ask griffin and stone they PM'd me and I gave them the name of the one I spoke of in my thread. Anybody who wants to know I will answer thru PM if they agree to keep it to themselves. >>
For the sake of accuracy...
1980 PM'ed me - I did not contact him first.
If anyone is interested in the names - just PM him - he will give you some insight.
They are the "usual suspects" that have been bantered around the different boards for a while.
And, although some may want to "flame" him - I think he sounds sincere.
I'm guessing he took a few too many baths and now wants to dry off at CU?
mike
Thanx for bringing the Brady back - it's the card I was thinking of but couldn't remember where I saw it.
I saved it to "my pics" for the future.
If you play around with a pixel ruler, you can definitely see that it has been "shaved."
Who sold the 9.5?
mike

Boy, laser cutters to trim modern cards.
<insert sarcastic tone here>
Sure glad that the vintage trimmers stick with the period and use razor blades. Makes it easy to spot.
