Question about Goudeys..

Since I am new to the Goudeys, I was wondering if it was common that some of the cards ink on the bottom front bleeds through to the back. I have a few of the 1933 Goudeys raw and noticed that the colored bar at the bottoms are slightly visible on the reverse. Is this common? Does it have any affect on grading? Thanks in advance!

I think it could be bleed-through, or it could be from sheets being stacked on top of each other right after printing, so it's almost like the ink from the front of the other sheet comes off on the back of the sheet on top of it.

As far as grading goes, for the most part there isn't a detraction if it's only slight. Consider it like the OPC rough cuts on edges. But if it's significant, it could result in a grade reduction.

I haven't dealt with enough of these to be an expert on it, but that's what I've gathered from my exposure.
  • No affect on grading to my knowledge, and it is a great way to differentiate fakes from real..
  • bleeding through to the back is fairly common. I personally don't like it as much as clean backs...but that is just personal preference. It does not look like PSA downgrades for it.
  • The bleeding is very common in the 33's. I don't think it detracts from the grade unless there has been severe bleeding so the back of the card is difficult to read. I have learned hte hard way that the great reprint makers have found a way for the cards to 'bleed' without them being authentic. They just use a crappier form of cardboard. By the way, which Goudey's do you have?

Thanks for the helpful info guys!!!

Ryan, I just have some commons now but am thinking of eventually doing a set. Im on the fence of choosing to do it raw or graded, but I am leaning towards raw with the big $ cards being graded. I love the card stock they used for those cards.
  • I sent you a PM. Maybe I can help you and you can help me, too.

  • It is quite common and actually and is not alway "bleeding through" as much as ink from the sheet below the card, once the run was going these sheets would stack on one another which would also cause the effect. Good luck on the set I have enjoyed working on my sets....now if I can just find a #106 card at a local garage sale in PSA 5 condition........
  • IF you find 2 at the same sale, will you pick one up for me. I'll settle for the lower grade.

  • LOL you got a deal! Just curious what you all plan on doing.....are you going for 100% complete on your 33 set with the 106 card? That is my plan when it is all said and done.

--cmoking long time my friend hope all is going well, what is up with your top 33 set? You doing some house cleaning, upgrading some more?
  • I'm working around the 106 card right now (I can't afford it in a 5) When I get everything done (hopefully within 18 months) I will try to find a deal to get one, but it will be the last project. How have you been going about finishing yours?
