Likelihood of a BGS 9.5 crossing over to a PSA 10?

Certainly nothing is guaranteed, but if any of you had to put a percentage on the number of cards with BGS 9.5 grade that crossover to a PSA 10, what would it be?

Depends on the types of cards being crossed over. I'd say 0 % on OPC hockey cards, but the rest would depend on the years, brands, and subgrades.
    Who is Rober Maris?
  • Gotcha. They'd all be early 90's baseball cards. I'm interested in getting some uniformity to my Frank Thomas Gem Mint RC collection, and want to be sure I won't then have to go out and pickup a bunch of the same cards again if I cross them over and have them come back with 9's.

For 90's baseball, if you send them all in at once I would say 50-60%. I have noticed when I send in a bunch (25+) solid cards (all 8's and 9's - I collect 70's football) I get more 9's than I would if I/when I have sent in just 10 with some modern cards. Just my 2 cents
  • I think that 50% is a bit optimistic.

If they are not sheet-cut I think you'll have a fairly high percentage. Keep an eye on the surface subgrade- if that's the lowest subgrade on the card then it's likely sheet-cut.

Chaz' learning curve is a little flat. Eventually he'll understand why people distinguish between cards that where cut by a sheet after the same cards were released in packs, and cards that were only distributed in panels, but we need to give him time.

Remember, this is the same guy who said that buying cases of '89 UD was a great idea even if they continue to go down in price, since a price decrease means that you could by even more and then 'dollar cost average'. I'm hopeful that Chaz will find time to share these unique economic insights with Charles Schwab, since I'm sure the novel idea of purchasing stocks now that you project will decline in value is one that will turn the investing world on its collective head.

If you crack out the cards, the percentage will be around 90-100%, as long as they are not the sheet cut type. But you have to crack out first and be very careful!

  • Chaz is easily the dumbest person on the message boards, i think he may be the same Chaz that used to promote the worst shows in the world. He also knew less about cards then anyone i ever met, that considered themselves in the business. If this is the same guy he couldnt even make a card shop thrive in 1990 with the backing of a major league baseball player.
  • Thanks for the responses!! Still not certain as to exactly what I'll do yet, but at least I have somewhat of an idea now.
  • You'll have a very good chance, I'd say 90% crossover. Basically the only way you won't is messing up the card when you crack it out of the original encapsulation. I collect Gem Mint rookies in BGS, PSA, and SGC but I've never cracked a Gem Mint card. I wouldn't do it, unless I was trying to finish a set or player(like a rookie year set of a certain player) and the majority were in 1 company.
    Collecting;
    Mark Mulder rookies
    Chipper Jones rookies
    Orlando Cabrera rookies
    Lawrence Taylor
    Sam Huff
    Lavar Arrington
    NY Giants
    NY Yankees
    NJ Nets
    NJ Devils
1950s-1960s Topps NY Giants Team cards

Looking for Topps rookies as well.
