Your Most Depressing Breaks

I'm not talking about a break where the condition of the cards was terrible and you lost a ton of money, but just a break of something that once you got into it you said to yourself 'you know what, this just isn't any fun'.

My vote would be split between 1986 True Value sets and 1991 Pacific football flash cards.

I purchased last year 4 vending boxes of 1983T.

Although I got a nice Ryno which got a 9 - I got no Gwynns or Boggs that were centered.

In fact, two of the boxes were almost all OCs!!!

Disappointing but that's the chance one takes with this kind of stuff.

Do you think the packs were searched?

  • Yeah, they definitely were. Seller gave me a partial refund, no questions asked, didnt even have to send him the cards back. The seller was a flipper with perfect feedback, so i know he wasnt the one who searched 'em.

Prolly me buying a case of 2006 Fleer Ultra this year.....then realizing that LUCKY 13 was not a subset and that the top 13 rookies were numbered to 500 only meaning you only get one of the top 13 rookies in a case....... WHAT?? I was hoping to do THE SET...which is what ULTRA SHOULD BE....Ultra is not SP Authentic where you go for broke for the big auto jersey rookie card......

Ive yet to crack the case........i bought it presell and already have lost about 150 on my investment based on what BIN prices are on ebay.....I crack it and ill prolly lose more.....

I pre-orded it back in mid-April when i was on a modern football craze....I have since started a 1954 psa 5-6 baseball card set that could have really used the funds.

    Loth

    Also...
Back in 2000 I bought a case of 1999 Fleer Focus which at the time had about 20 different auto cards...10 superstar auto's and around 10 common auto's.....stangely enough with that set you had great auto odds and about 10 auto's per case!!!!!! I pulled all 10 common auto's including Jeff Blake, Kleinsasser, Testaverde, some WR bust for the broncos named Travis Mcgriff and other rookie busts.

    Wow Ryan

That's too bad! Sorry to hear all this.

I have some great wars stories from the early 90s - especially 1992 - I still have a bunch of unopened Stadium club!

    Oh well...it's only money?

1988 Score Baseball back in the day. I ordered direct...did well on the factory sets but the packs were a terrible seller. I was left with plenty.

Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Busted a box of 1989 Upper Deck low# a few years back. Not only did I get NO Griffey, I got NO Rookie Star cards at all. And further, about 75% of the cards in the box had a small crease near the edge. All the star cards (the few that I found) had the crease.

So, best card I got in the whole box was a Nolan Ryan that'd get slabbed as a PSA 5 or 6. Hmm, how much do those go for?

You too? Good to know someone else has slogged through a box of these as well. For those of you who haven't broken this box, about half the set seems to be punters and there are only really four stars-- Elway, Smith, Sanders and Montana. Add to the fact that every pack is perfectly sequenced-- by the time you've opened six packs you can tell exactly what the next nine cards will be based on the card on top-- and you have all the required elements for a terrible break; no star power, total predictability, and no secondary value.

I'll also put up a toast to the guy who said 1990 Pro Set. A dirty, no-fun break no matter how cheap they are.

A close second is 2 boxes of 2005 SP authentic fb. Out of 2 boxes, I only pulled 5 auto's (suppose to pull 6) and the best auto was Dan Orvlasky. Talk about watered down cr*p.

Boopotts, Thanks for noticing...Allow me to further embarrass myself by mentioning that I went to great lengths to assemble as many of the 1990 Pro Set Football Announcer Subsets as I possibly could. Nothing more attractive than a man holding his microphone. Still own 'em all!

1978 Topps baseball vending box. The WORST off centered, print marked, dinged crap I have ever seen to date. I NEVER throw cards in the garbage but I took the ENTIRE lot and tossed them all right into the can.

I just bought a box off eBay. I usually like Ultra products, but now I am really going to sweat it out. After seeing what the Bush and Leinhart brought though I guess it could be sweet if you had the Bush in your case.

The time has come to just say 'no' to all Upper Deck stuff. The new SP Hockey is a total fraud, and I cannot believe what they've done to Sweet Spot. $120 a box, one auto and one GU, and the auto checklist is chock filled with total nobodies.

    Remembered another awful box break.

The year that Topps first reprinted the Mantle cards - 1994 or 5?

I went to a show in NJ off the turnpike or something.

Because of the intense popularity, I paid like 60 or 70 for the box.

Got zero Mantles! Statistically - should have gotten 4.

Well, I wrote Topps and included the box UPC code.

They replied back that they don't guarantee any box but did include 4 Mantle cards!

I have always liked their customer relations dept.

  • Not sure if this qualifies, but I accumulated a lot of 85 Topps sets, factory and others, wax packs with big mac showing, 85 mcgwire autographed cards, and psa 8 and 9 mcgwires by the butt load. Did I mention that this was all before barry broke the record and mcgwires went into the toilet? But at least the steroid testimony went well....imageimageimage
