Anyone heard about the Mickey Mantle letter?

I got an e-mail today with a pdf of a letter that supposedly the Yanks sent to Mick in 1972. It asked for his favorite memory of Yankee Stadium and his answer was lewd but I found it hilarious.

Has anyone seen this? It was signed by Mick and the sig looked legit. LMK if you have any info or if you want to see it. I can't post it because its a pdf and the he talks about sexual acts.

  • Got this in email last night from zef.

If it is real (I have no idea), could he have written this when he was drunk?

That is an old joke. I'm just about sure it is not real.

Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

One quick way to weed it out as a fake is to find out if he signed that way in 1973. I know in earlier years, he signed his name totally different. Does anybody know when he developed the more modern signature like the one at the bottom of the letter?

I guess it's a fake but I could see Mantle possibly doing that. Mantle did have a bit of a "dark side" to him, and he enjoyed a good laugh, and I could see him being out of baseball at that time for a few years and being a bit bored so he writes that. But I do remember seeing some of those Old Timers games on TV and Mantle always seemed to thoroughly enjoy himself. One Old Timers game, I can't remember the year, Whitey Ford served up Mantle some straight probably 65 MPH "fastballs" and after whiffing at a few of them, Mantle clobbered one - he really enjoyed hitting that homer, so even if he wrote that letter, he most likely still enthusiastically participated in the event.
  • Fake or not,
Thats still funny as h e double hockey sticksimage
  • What lends credit to this was a plate that Mantle had autographed some time ago that was sold at auction with an interesting off color quote. Its things like these that have always made Mantle an icon in the hobby...
  • Hmm sig looks same as the "Have a Ball C### Sucker" autograph. But Im no expert.
