Ugliest PSA 9 ever?

I don't want to get into whether this card is in fact a true PSA 9, because I think it fits the criteria, but I really wish PSA had a "no tilt" clause in their definition of a Mint card...

  • yeah that's pretty ragged and crooked... not very nice even if it hits the requirements for a 9.. i guess they didn't have grounds to knock it down any further...

edited to add: now that lew alcindor card, that's another story... that thing gives hope to every crappy-edged card i own.

Did anyone save a picture of the famous '78 Carew?

I dunno - I've seen some Kelloggs cards graded PSA 9 that subsequently developed a dozen or so cracks. Those are freaking ugly.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Wont the Kelloggs get cracks whenever they are in the cold ? I was told by someone a while back to never buy one in the winter because it would crack in shipping just from the weather.

I had a PSA 8 Riggins Rookie from 1972 Topps. I cracked the case out and knicked the side with the screw driver. I was sick to my stomach. I sent it in anyway and it came back a 9 with the huge chip. The centering was 50 50 and corners were rock solid. I am guessing they saw that and didn't even bother with the sides. I don't have a scan because I traded it to a friend who buys the holder not the card. I am sad though, the last riggins PSA9 sold for $380 last week.
  • I don't know. I have a PSA 9 1975 Topps #629 Joe Hoerner in my registry that has a nice little ballpoint pen mark across the front of the card extending from his left arm (above the baseball). Still haven't figured out how they missed that one. image

I can tell by the font on the Alcindor card that it was graded quite a long time ago. Any chance they've stiffened their grading policy? There is no way that would grade a 9 in today’s market!!

Most think that TODAYS grading is MUCH more loose than it was in the beginning.

    ISO 1978 Topps Baseball in NM-MT High Grade Raw 3, 100, 103, 302, 347, 376, 416, 466, 481, 487, 509, 534, 540, 554, 579, 580, 622, 642, 673, 724__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ISO 1978 O-Pee-Chee in NM-MT High Grade Raw12, 21, 29, 38, 49, 65, 69, 73, 74, 81, 95, 100, 104, 110, 115, 122, 132, 133, 135, 140, 142, 151, 153, 155, 160, 161, 167, 168, 172, 179, 181, 196, 200, 204, 210, 224, 231, 240

  • I just noticed that Morgan was an O-Pee-Chee. It's my understanding that PSA is a little more lenient if the charactersitic is common throughout the issue. I don't own many 1970's O-Pee-Chee cards but the edging is definately a common trait, I'm not sure about the tilt though. Are most '78 O-Pee-chee's tilted? image

  • Not sure how those edges get a 9...but ya never know with some of the graders these days.

The Morgan is an OPC rough cut, which is perfectly acceptable. The chipping on the Alcindor, however... image

When this thread started, I knew I had to unearth these two cards. Both seem to be a bit off.
