Dumb 1989 Upper Deck question

Does the Griffey rookie appear in Hi/Low wax boxes or both?

He appears in both series but you have a better chance of getting one in the low series since there are less cards (600 I think) in the low series than the high series (700 I think).

Correct, except it is 700 cards in low series and 800 in high series. The high series packs have the low series cards and the 100 card high series set in it.

Also consider that you get like 4-6 Hi series cards in each hi series pack, so your chances of pulling a Griffey are a lot less in hi # packs than in low # packs.

I ripped 4-5 boxes of high # with NO griffeys. I think there is a way to search boxes??? I would say IMHO it is impossible to pull a griffey from a high # box. Also, is there a market for any of the 89 UD with no hologram? I found 3 or 4 in my flood that had none on the back??

I heard that UD sorted packs and cards via a pridictable sequence, so you could open one pack and figure out what was in the box (or the case), from what I understand.

Griffey's can be pulled from Hi packs. I remember back in 1991, I plunked down $8 at a local card shop and bought two packs of 1989 UD hi... got a Griffey in each pack. Very nice. :-)

Digicat is right on about the sequence. When I had a store in the 1990s guys would come in all the time and try the buy one and count method. I learned to shuffle packs and while it cost me some business I'm sure, those guys stopped coming into my place. The 1989 UD ($3/pack) were popular as were the 1990 Leaf which was also pretty predictable.
  • One of my best memories was buying a pack when it first came out in 1989. Two Griffey's in the same pack! Both had corner damage so I sent them back to Upper Deck and they returned two mint cards in exchange.
  • You sent them back to Upper Deck....cool. I did not know you could do that - maybe back then, but I am sure not today.

I remember having better luck in the High# boxes with Griffey. But, it must've been one of those weird things. I ended up with about 6 in one box and 2 in one pack! I also ended up with multiples of several of the Hi# cards. I remember ending up with some common player about 12 to 15 times.

good thinking moose dog.. i'm sure they're the same guys that go to target and "pack feel" now.. if i catch a guy doing that, i'm going to put his head through the display.. i do not want my cards pawed by some idiot before i even get them, thank you very much...
