Finding a "Rare" one...... The rest of the story....

Well, I shared several email's with a dealer/collector regarding the 1873 PiO 10 Centavos i found, I learned several factor's.

1. Rarity vs. Condition is a major concern.

2. Holed is a great thing.... ( For LordM, maybe but not for me...image

3. Doesn't matter if you have a R-6 or R-7.....If the collector's of this coin are R-9.......image

I really searched every site i could........ Auction's, Heritage, Stack's, eBay, Completed auction's, Price's realized........ No where can i find even one reference of this coin listed. The dealer/collector i emailed said that my coin is genuine, and that he know's of only 10 now out of the original 4,750 minted. He also said that none of them are above XF. I wasn't trying to sell the coin to him. I was just looking for some info.

I could have the coin repaired, I could most likely get it slabbed at ANACS? But what good would that do? At least slabbed would keep it from falling thru the maze of coin's that surround me. What a total mess. But, I at least have a coin with a pop of 10 and a R-6 or R-7.

The Dealer/Collector estimated the value at $25.00 to $50.00 , That's pretty sad considering if it had been a 1652 NE Three pence all bent and holed. At least i learned that Rarity sometime's mean's very little.

I would not go by just one Dealer/Collector's estimate.

Value is basically supply and demand. If no one wants the coin, it isn't valuable. If two people really want the coin, it is valuable. I personally would think of getting it 'slabbed' if for no other reason, aucthenticity sake.

I hear you though ozzysdad. I have a British medal with an R4 rating (only three known examples) that I bought off the Bay a few years back. So rare that the British museum doesn't even have an example of the "common" R3 version in white metal. But I seriously doubt I could get the $25 I paid for it, and it's a beauty. So, I brag about it! image

Yes, KM#403.9 , Funny thing is i was searching around eBay, and ran across a few 2 1/2 Escudo's dated 1964, A pretty common coin from Portugal. They are ranging from 45.00 to 25.00........ I couldn't believe it..... I probably have at least 50 or more of them, I seriously doubt i could even give one away. Kind of make's me ill........................image

Sure you could...we are all happy to participate in giveaways around here image.

I must have missed your first thread. Can you imagine what a liteside coin of a similar year and rarity would go for? Holed and all. Sigh. I would still be proud to have such a rarity.

There is a very broad database at CoinArchives.com which will give you more auction results information (including a lot of European actions) than just the dealers you mentioned. Good luck.

It's a bit ironic that those of us who are used to having fellow US collectors unable to even feign interest in our coins because ours are "foreign" to find a coin with little interest among fellow dark siders (at least those interested enough to pay for the rarity).

I'd contact some like Heritage and see if they could give you any sort of Value.
    Just a thought
  • I don't know? I'm just curious about the value..... I sure as #%&* don't need more coin's..... And i am about to get burned out here. I've been trying to pack all of it in the safe and Fuggettabout it for awhile. I've got the feeling it's a serious OCD..... What do you do when you have aquired boxe's you can't hardly lift, So many i'm not even sure of what i have unless i happen to be looking thru the KM book's and remember i have some of those and this one and that one, and several of that date.......lol... and it's getting overwhelming. I remember my dad having a sign in his office that said, " He Who Die's With The Most Toy's" WIN'S. I suppose i have all the money i will ever need, As long as i don't spend any of it. I think i might just start finding time to go fishing. Get laid? That's a nice option.............. Spend more time with my grandkid's........My dog, Ozzy, Old English Sheepdog, Best friend of 12 yr's. A Giveaway??????? I think i might just do that..... Now let me see what i have that you guy's and the ladie's might like...... I'm sure it need's to be "Darkside"...

I would slab it if possible and sit on it for some years, maybe the market will come around, either way you have a rare artifact of Mexican history.
