1st submission grades finally posted

WOW - When you guys said be prepared to be disappointed, I had no idea. I am blown away at the grades these cards received. I must have alot to learn or something, but still did not expect this. The '58 Mantle All Star, to the naked eye was in worse condition than all 3 1960 cards. The Mantle had soft corners, all 60's were clean with sharp corners and no visable surface markings. I knew the Doby was OC, but it was such a clean card. I hope I can post scans when I receive the cards back b/c I would love to get everyone's opinions, if only to educate myself in this process.

I also learned not to buy from a certain eBay seller as both cards that were rejected were purchased from him. Is it okay to mention his ID on this site. Not going to pass judgement, but seems odd.

Hopefully someone can cheer me up
Carpe Diem

    Welcome to the nightmare.

My first free submission was a lot of 6 '89 Donruss Griffeys (this was back in 2000). I just PORED over my stack of these cards, and after about two hours pulled six of them that I was sure were absolutely flawless. They all came back 8's image

Now and then you'll get a set of 'Grades from Outer Space' (I had this happen with a bunch of '62 York Yellow Backs about two years ago), where you simply cannot figure out what the hell is wrong with the cards, but 9 times out of 10 things become a lot clearer once you have the cards in hand and can look them over. Hopefully when you get the cards back you'll have a chance to look them over and your grades will make a little more sense.

Also, I wouldn't blame the guy you bought the two rejected cards from just yet. Most dealers (I think) are smart enough to know that PSA can catch recolor jobs fairly easily, so he probably didn't do the work on that card, and the factory miscut is Topps' fault-- not the dealers. It's possible he just sold them as he bought them (although if he also has graded stuff for sale then you can bet he submitted them at some point, which means he knowingly sold you cards that would be rejected).
  • don't get discouraged buddy... everyone gets slaughtered their first time through.. be thankful you didn't submit more cards, and learn from it.. you're on the right track by posting for advice.. these guys will help you plenty.. i don't collect vintage baseball so it's not my area, but i would just tell you to also expect a spanking on your second submission.. just kidding! sort of..

good luck with your next batch.

The 1960 TOPPS 73 BOB GIBSON N/A 5 might have a surface wrinkle. If it looks good like you said it does , that most likely was the case. I know that bit me once on a really sweet looking 78 Payton card.
