Should I buy a "double" of a favorite autographed item?

Help me out with this, please, because I can't make up my mind:

I have a favorite sports hero. His name does not matter. I already own an autographed ball from him. Another has come up for auction on eBay. The price is right. Should I buy the second one-- and give myself two of them-- perhaps one to resell later?

On the numismatic side, we do this all the time, trying to get slightly higher "graded" coins.

My sports autographed item is not "graded" though it is authenticated. The second piece now on eBay is NOT authenticated, but I know it can get authentication-- because Im very familiar with it and where it came from.

Thoughts? Thanks.

If it is your favorite athlete, and it is an item you like, I say buy it! Display one, keep one put away.

But don't buy it with the idea of making a profit later, buy it because you like it and for the pleasure it will bring you.

    MoneyLA:

I think that you should be approximately nine more autographed balls.

    One for your back pocket
    One for your glove compartment
One for your nuclear fallout shelter
One to hide in the cookie jar
One to hide underneath your dirty underwear
    One in your badminton bag
    One under your mattress
One to throw at someone else, in case of argument
One for having the ball painted with a picture of the player on it

And, if I knew the specific player, I could make a suggestion for streak or uniform number. Much like the display table Barry Halper had that displayed 56 autographed Joe DiMaggio baseballs, as a way to commemorate his hitting streak.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

In the case you describe, I try to find a different type of item that is autographed for my collection, so if I have a ball, I may add a signed photo or baseball card. To me, I like the variety in what I have. I don't think I would want two identical items in my collection. The exception may be two balls from different eras, such as a Mantle ball from his playing days versus one that is more recent. But to each his own. That's the great thing about collecting.

Don't worry about reselling the 2nd item (you won't want to anyways). Buy two, why not?

I'd say go for it. I have multiples of many of my autographed items, even cards!
    Who is Rober Maris?
  • Buy it. Since you like it, even if you never sell it you win. Plus who knows if in XX years your one auto will fade, ect..its always good to have another.

Buy two, three, four, however many you want. There are a few of my favorite players that I have multiple autos of. I agree with others who have mentioned that maybe you could pick up autos on different items...ball, card, photo, bat, etc.

  • i say buy it if you can afford it and want it.. why not? if it's a good price and it's going to be authenticated, then look at it as money in the bank and you can always pick which one is truly nicer and sell the other one.. if you do it right you could even upgrade your item and make a few bucks...

I think it all depends on sure you are that this item is indeed authentic. If you're 100 percent sure it's the real deal and it's something you can pick up at a good price, why not? As you said, you might be able to sell it down the road, but should you decide to keep it, it's of your favorite player, so it's a win-win situation. image

  • If it is authentic and, like you said "the price is right" there's nothing wrong with two.
