YOU make the call....

Well, I turned to you guys once before, and with your advice I was able to pick up a very nice 1975 PSA 9 Staubach.

Now Im at it again... this time the dilema is:

1933 Sport Kings, Ty Cobb, PSA 2

or

1967 Mickey Mantle, PSA 8

Both are within $50 of each other, was curious which was more appealing? I dont have a Cobb in my collection, and feel like every good collection derserves one, but fairly high grade Mantles are nice as well....duh

  • Mantle.

A Mantle in your collection (in an 8 no less) is always special.
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

I've gotta say...the allure of the Cobb for that beautiful set is appealing, but a Mantle in PSA 8 is too hard to pass up in my eyes.

    Depends on your plans?

I already have quite a few Mantles and no Cobbs - so I would pick the Cobb.

Now, if you are talking future sale? I think the 8 may perform better - that's a common issue tho.

Pre-war Cobb - they have been performing well also.

If you are a quality guy - Mick.

Ty Cobb with out a doubt.

    here is why:

PSA has graded a total of "271" 33 SportKings Cobbs in all grades.

not a rare card it would seem..but consider that PSA has graded "513" 67 topps Mantles in PSA 8 alone.

  • same thing here Stone, I have a few mantles (3) , but none higher than a 6. And I have no Cobb.

calleocho, I was sure of the stats, but figured that there were a siginifican t # more mantles, I had no idea it was nearly 3 to 1, JUST IN PSA 8 ALONE!!!!

I also think there are more out there that may be forthcoming in the next few years....

this is a boatload of cash for me, and for all the reasons you guys have mentioned, Mick in 8 or Cobb in any grade is something Im really agonizing about. But as always, I appreciate your feedback.

After looking at those scans, I'd still go for the Cobb. From the scan at least, the Cobb looks like a "strong" 2. The Mantle is off-center to the top. With the number of '67 Mantles that are graded, I'd hold out for a better centered one.

If you do not have a Mantle, I would go with the Mick.

The Cobb would be nice to have, but the "show-it-to-others"
factor is MUCH higher with the Mantle. Many people do not
know who Cobb was, but almost everybody has heard of
    Mantle.

The Cobb is real scarce; but, the Mantle is not super-abundant
relative to the number of "new collectors" who will need/want
    it during the coming years.

I would take Mick in this case. Now, if it was a T206 Cobb, I would probably say the Cobb. Yes, the Sport Kings are nice but I think the Cobb T206 "action" poses are second to none....and you can find some really nice, presentable PSA 1's out there for about 500-700

You can always buy a 1967 PSA 6 topps Mantle...you can probably find one for $150

Actually, that may be the best way to make the decision. Since the Cobb in any grade
is relatively scarce, the Cobb + a lesser-grade Mantle is probably a better have than
    just the PSA 8 Mantle.

I guess I am changing my vote.

Cobb. I think Cobbs are so much more unique in a baseball card collection. I have Mantles but I don't have a Cobb, Ruth, etc.... If I had $500 to blow I would go Cobb for sure. I should add that I have no clue what the SMR is on thse cards and am assuming they are comparable so that neither card is a better "deal" than the other.
  • My vote is for the Sports Kings Cobb.

    Ty Cobb

    Batted over .400 three times (1911, 1912 & 1922)

Try to get better pictures, front an back. Both scans are poor, so it's tough to judge what the flaws are on the Cobb. It can't just be the rounded corners. I've got a Cobb myself that would probably grade a 1, but it still has great eye appeal. The Mick, though, is the choice. I'm a big fan of pre-war material, and if the Cobb was a 3 I'd say take that, but a sharp 8 versus a possibly really cruddy 2 is an easy choice.
