Oh well, since I'm on the 'got grades' theme

I had a couple FREE grading coupons for ICG so I sent in a couple ancient coins. Received the grades today:

1. Macedonia Alexander the Great tetradrachm ICG AU58, boy I thought it was Unc.

2. Parthian Artabands II Drachm ICG EF40

No images until the coins are returned to me.

I know little to nothing about ancients but I have always been curious. How does an ancient coin qualify for a grade such as UNC? What are the differentiators between an AU and UNC coin? I am assuming it is based on the strength of the strike alone? What is the highest level of MS that an ancient will grade? Aren't all ancients cleaned at some point?

  • How you get the free coupon?

I got the free coupons because on a previous submission they took 3 months to grade the coins and gave me the runaround many times.
