Most esoteric U.S. coin collecting

Ever since the article in the Gobrecht Journal about the 1861-O half dollar die marriages, I've been trying to collect them all, except the Confederate reverse. I've been collecting all coins from 1861 already.
What other esoteric collecting do others do on this board? It seems most folks collect a standard way, i.e. by type or date/mint. What unusual collections of U.S. coins are being put together?
By the way, I'm 25% finished with the 1861-O half dollars by die marriage, thanks to Dick Osborn. A wonderful guy.

I have 1/3 of a set of electrotypes of the proof only half cents from the 1840's.
I WANT THEM,
I collect 1827 bust halves by die marriage. Out of 49 die pairs I have 45. The rest of the bust half nuts around here can probably figure out which ones I still need. (That's right...THOSE four.:grrrr)
Which do you need, the O-124 or the O-144, both R5+? The other three must be O-137 R6, O-148 R6+, & O-149 R8.
Please realize that I am not offering one of my dups.
<< <i>The real problem in buying an 1827 CBH O-144, is that those few collectors owning them in the grade you want likely will never sell their coins. Opting for a much lower grade might be the only way to own one of these in your lifetime. >>
opting for a lower grade with any of the marriages I still need will be the only way (short of a cherry tree falling on me) will be the only way I can own them even if current owners did sell.
Proud to say I found you one!
