Most esoteric U.S. coin collecting

tjkilliantjkillian Posts: 5,578 ✭✭✭
Ever since the article in the Gobrecht Journal about the 1861-O half dollar die marriages, I've been trying to collect them all, except the Confederate reverse. I've been collecting all coins from 1861 already.
What other esoteric collecting do others do on this board? It seems most folks collect a standard way, i.e. by type or date/mint. What unusual collections of U.S. coins are being put together?

By the way, I'm 25% finished with the 1861-O half dollars by die marriage, thanks to Dick Osborn. A wonderful guy.

Blatantly AT'd moderns in PCGS holders.
  • State quarter spoons bought in garage sales for $.25 or less. Presently have around 30. I did buy 10 Texas spoons for $2.50 once. I think kids had been using them in a sand box.

I collect AG grade Barber dimes, and enjoy my "grading set" of AG 3.0, 3.3, 3.5, and 3.7 coins. I still need one that qualifies as PO-1 at one of the major TPG services.

I think everything I collect meets the definition of "esoteric," and frankly I wouldn't want it any other way.

Esoteric is all about Key Date coins for this hobbiest. MS64 is the minimum grade I look for. In 04-purchased 1909S VDB Red, in 05 purchased 1928 Peace Dollar, fall of 06 will bring another purchase. Maybe Key Date Mercury dime or Franklin. Of course another goal is to own a early date copper. Any suggestions?image

Not all that esoteric, but a little off the beaten path...

I collect 1827 bust halves by die marriage. Out of 49 die pairs I have 45. The rest of the bust half nuts around here can probably figure out which ones I still need. (That's right...THOSE four.:grrrr)
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

    OKbustchaser,

    Which do you need, the O-124 or the O-144, both R5+? The other three must be O-137 R6, O-148 R6+, & O-149 R8.

Please realize that I am not offering one of my dups.image I am missing 21 marriages from 1827.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

The real problem in buying an 1827 CBH O-144, is that those few collectors owning them in the grade you want likely will never sell their coins. Opting for a much lower grade might be the only way to own one of these in your lifetime.

Anything made from a half dime, including many love tokens, stick pins, buttons, cuff links, watch fobs, bracelets, a necklace, a letter opener with a half dime in the handle, and a spoon with a half dime as the bowl.

opting for a lower grade with any of the marriages I still need will be the only way (short of a cherry tree falling on me) will be the only way I can own them even if current owners did sell. image

I dont have them anymore but i once started a large cent date set with holes--i had about 30 or them then sold them to a dealer who made me an offer that i could not refuse.
I Started a counterfiet type set but alas it was stolen in 1990. had some pretty neat ones too-like a 1960-D dime. i did not restart this set as of yet. Bob
