Why is Doug Winter Numismatics moving to Portland, OR?

LongacreLongacre Posts: 16,717 ✭✭✭
I just noticed this in his website. I don't think it makes a difference to me, but every time he changes addresses, I have to do my Mission Impossible routine and sneak to the safe deposit box and update my "if I should keel over this is what to do with the coins" list. imageimage

Are there big fish in Portland as opposed to Tacoma, WA? I wouldn't think a physical location makes a difference from a business standpoint, but I was curious if Portland, OR is a hot bed for numismatics.

    Why not ask Doug directly?
  • Tacoma is a crap hole and Portland is a nice big beautiful city. He's probably moving there and just taking his bisiness with him.
I'm going to Portland tonight and will stay untill tomorrow. Oregon rocks!
  • Cause Washington sucks!!image

I read somewhere that Portland has the highest density of strip club in the West Coast... Maybe that's why... image

    He likes Portland better.

As a national dealer, unless you live in Baltimore, the LA area, or Dallas, location is probably irrelevant. Moving to Portland might make his travel slightly more complex than if he were travelling from Seattle. Neither is a good location from which to regularly travel for business.

Oregon has income tax vs B&O tax in Washington???

Certainly, that is not true - I would guess that both San Francisco and LA have a critical mass of collectors that dwarfs Portland's or Seattle's, and the flights are much easier.

I recon that there are plenty of other areas where those cities are much worse, but from apure business standpoint, I don't know...

Would I have had you if I told you that there is rumored to be an undiscovered hoard of uncirculated New Orleans gold coins hidden in the northwestern Oregon area?

When 95+ % of your customers live somewhere else, who cares? Frankly, if DW lived down the street from me, I would not buy more (or fewer) coins from him than I do now.

Doug just likes Portland more than Washington....I believe had the cost of living been a non factor, he would have chosen a different West Coast city other than Portland however...

I wish him the best and think the move will be pretty much transparent to everyone except Doug.

my guesstimate is that is where he bought his home a nicer home with a better value then the way overpriced real estate in greater seattle area
  • Why not just ask Doug ? Forget the speculation !

The answer is quite obvious. Have you seen the design Washington selected for their quarter? It is a hodgepodge of mountain, fish, state outline. Of course the alternatives were worse - a cartoonish Orca whale and some other forgettable design. Can't blame Doug for leaving a state that embarrased his profession by designing such an embarrasing numismatic item. image (Portland - the Rose Capital of the Northwest)

P.S. It also helps that Oregon has no sales tax!

This is the view from Doug's front living room in Tacoma image No, it is the image for the new State Quarter that you will see next year.

We welcome him here. Tacoma is like east LA compared to Portland, and that photo is not from Tacoma, suberb maybe but not Tacoma.

The Washington State Quarter looks better that the Oregon Beach reverse that has no class. They designed the reverse from a picture someone took that has no originality what so ever. They did not even have the copyright to the picture and the USMINT had to pay the photograpfer off with money and some Oregon State Quarters. What a joke that was to uncover. Did Oregon get to vote on thier quarter? Washington did. Portland did have a nice A.N.A. show back in 2004 and that is all I have to say about that.image

For personal reasons, DW decided to relocate to Portland. He likes the area. Nothing more to it than that.

DW must have read this post. He addressed the question in a recent newsletter:

"On June 23rd, Douglas Winter Numismatics is moving to Portland, Oregon. We’ve been asked why we are moving to Portland instead of staying in the Seattle area and the answer is simple: it’s strictly a lifestyle choice. My wife and I love Portland. We love the fact that we can walk to great shops and restaurants and have access to superb culture and recreation. Portland isn't what I’d call a great coin town and it certainly is no easier for me to get to the east coast than before, but I think it’s going to be a great move for me and for DWN."

Yes, and Crater Lake is unique to Oregon. What is so unique about a fish and a mountain that is shamed by Alaska's Mt. McKinley? Oh, OK, that outline of the state only matches Washington.

Having been born and raised in Seattle, stationed in Seattle, stationed in Portland, OR and now stationed in Washington DC, I would live in either city in a heartbeat compared to this rathole. I do like Portlands downtown better however they don't have professional baseball or football (yes I know there is a minor league team with a downtown stadium). Rose Festival is an absolute blast. My Coast Guard Cutter wne there in 1990. The city welcomes you with open arms. Little did they know we made the long trip from Astoria, OR. Downtown Portland is also very clean. Traffic and housing are about the same. Quality of restaurants is the same. Same great seafood. Why have maine lobster when you can have Dungeness Crab? Not even close in comparison.

Oh what I would trade to be back in the great Pacific Northwet er Northwest (not my XF45 Barber Half set though).
