Why is Doug Winter Numismatics moving to Portland, OR?
I just noticed this in his website. I don't think it makes a difference to me, but every time he changes addresses, I have to do my Mission Impossible routine and sneak to the safe deposit box and update my "if I should keel over this is what to do with the coins" list.

Are there big fish in Portland as opposed to Tacoma, WA? I wouldn't think a physical location makes a difference from a business standpoint, but I was curious if Portland, OR is a hot bed for numismatics.

<< <i>Tacoma is a crap hole and Portland is a nice big beautiful city. He's probably moving there and just taking his bisiness with him.

I will take Portland, Maine over Portland, Oregon and day! He should move here and I will trade him lobsters for coins.

As a national dealer, unless you live in Baltimore, the LA area, or Dallas, location is probably irrelevant. Moving to Portland might make his travel slightly more complex than if he were travelling from Seattle. Neither is a good location from which to regularly travel for business.

Certainly, that is not true - I would guess that both San Francisco and LA have a critical mass of collectors that dwarfs Portland's or Seattle's, and the flights are much easier.
I recon that there are plenty of other areas where those cities are much worse, but from apure business standpoint, I don't know...

When 95+ % of your customers live somewhere else, who cares? Frankly, if DW lived down the street from me, I would not buy more (or fewer) coins from him than I do now.

Yeah, well shipping would be cheaper

I am sure you would be running a lot more "errands" during lunch, though.

I wish him the best and think the move will be pretty much transparent to everyone except Doug.

P.S. It also helps that Oregon has no sales tax!
deserts..etc, etc.
Bring them all we like it!! No Sales Tax too!

<< <i>We welcome him here. Tacoma is like east LA compared to Portland, and that photo is not from Tacoma, suberb maybe but not Tacoma. >>
Sorry, I got them mixed up this is the one from Tacoma.
<< <i>The answer is quite obvious. Have you seen the design Washington selected for their quarter? It is a hodgepodge of mountain, fish, state outline. Of course the alternatives were worse - a cartoonish Orca whale and some other forgettable design. Can't blame Doug for leaving a state that embarrased his profession by designing such an embarrasing numismatic item. >>
The Washington State Quarter looks better that the Oregon Beach reverse that has no class. They designed the reverse from a picture someone took that has no originality what so ever. They did not even have the copyright to the picture and the USMINT had to pay the photograpfer off with money and some Oregon State Quarters. What a joke that was to uncover. Did Oregon get to vote on thier quarter? Washington did. Portland did have a nice A.N.A. show back in 2004 and that is all I have to say about that.
I don't see the lone motorcyclist in the foreground in this picture. You remember. The guy in the
1970's R-a-i-n N-e-e-r B-e-e-r commercial. Where the heck is he???

The real estate market in portland is out of control too....
"On June 23rd, Douglas Winter Numismatics is moving to Portland, Oregon. We’ve been asked why we are moving to Portland instead of staying in the Seattle area and the answer is simple: it’s strictly a lifestyle choice. My wife and I love Portland. We love the fact that we can walk to great shops and restaurants and have access to superb culture and recreation. Portland isn't what I’d call a great coin town and it certainly is no easier for me to get to the east coast than before, but I think it’s going to be a great move for me and for DWN."
Mebbe so--but you have to be in an aircraft @ about 30,000ft above the clouds to see the sky
<< <i>DW must have read this post. He addressed the question in a recent newsletter:

Yes, and Crater Lake is unique to Oregon. What is so unique about a fish and a mountain that is shamed by Alaska's Mt. McKinley? Oh, OK, that outline of the state only matches Washington.
Oh what I would trade to be back in the great Pacific Northwet er Northwest (not my XF45 Barber Half set though).
Looking for Denmark 1874 20-Kroner. Please offer.
