New Paypal Scam??

I received an email stating I paid someone $215 for a IPOD. I checked my account and it shows I did not pay them anyone. The email states it is an unconfirmed address and that I dispute the charges click a link. Has anyone else seen this scam attempt?

Thanks,

Glen

  • Yes...they are phishing, hoping you click on a link in their message. It is totally a hoax, NOT SENT by PAYPAL.
DO NOT CLICK ON ANY LINKS ON IT, OR GIVE ANY PERSONAL INFO. Hopefully you did the right thing by exiting from the email and going to your paypal account. DELETE IT!!

I get those all the time pretending to be from Paypal and Ebay. Forward them to spoof@paypal.com or spoof@ebay.com. Ebay will take care of it. I've forwarded them at least a couple hundred times and I would like to believe that somebody is sitting in jail right now in part because of my actions.

I do also forward all to the spoof@ addies...........It would be nice to think that someone is in jail.........most of these emails though originate from eastern Europe and asia.

I got the same, and I will say they are getting smarter. One of the easiest ways to tell a phishing e-mail involving PayPal is when it's addressed to "Dear PayPal Customer," PayPal ALWAYS uses your first and last name in their e-mail correspondence. This one involving the iPod had my first and last name, but the name was in a different font than the rest of the message, as if someone Photoshopped the name in there. When putting the cursor over the link provided, it was obviously not taking me to PayPal.

Getting more sophisticated, but always just go to your PayPal/eBay/whatever account directly and check it out.

While this is a good indication that the link was not a PayPal link, that trick can be defeated if the scammers weren't lazy. Use your bookmarks or type the address in as you indicate.

I can't tell you how many times my eBay and PayPal accounts "have been suspended because of suspicious activity". image

I get at least one of those a week. One was particularly interesting in that the entire content of the email was one big link -- so that if you clicked anywhere in the email, even accidentally, of course, you'd be sent off to the bogus PayPal site. So, be careful with your mouse and cursor on those things.

I always forward the bogus emails to spoof@ebay.com, but I really wonder, though, if eBay or PayPal has had much or any success at all in catching the perps... You'd think that if they were catching people and getting convictions, etc., they'd be crowing about it from the rooftops.

I have a friend who works for eBay, and apparently many of the phishing scammers are Romanian.
  • yes i get them all the time claiming i bought a cell phone... an easy way to tell is to put your cursor over the body of the "receipt" and right click.. if the option of "save picture as" is available, the "letter" is an image and a scam...
  • There are also a handful of phishing emails that will address you by your first and last name--never click on the link.
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

The phishing emails are getting much better/less obvious. Last week I had one that included my first & last name & a link to a website that at first glance appears to be paypal. I forget what the exact server name was but it was something like www.paypal.com.cardcom.com/...
