Hey everybody. I have been wanting to get a metal detector for years but never have bought one. I am leaving on June 18 for the beach and from what I have been told the beach we are going to (Edisto Island in SC) there isn't much to do there.
I decided to ask my brother if I could borrow his detector for the beach trip so he drove over today to drop it off and gave me some pointers. After he left, I asked my youngest daughter (10 years old) if she wanted to go outside in the backyard and play around with it and see if we could find some "treasures". She got all excited, so we ventured out into the 100 degree heat.
My house is over 100 years old so I thought maybe I could find something of interest. We found a 1967 quarter, a 1958 penny, and a couple of other more recent pennies, an old nail, and a corroded ring..
The detector is a White's XMT with headphones and I had a small army looking shovel and a pointer. All I can say is that I am hooked on this hobby. If it hadn't been for the heat, I would have stayed out a lot longer than 45 minutes.
If I find anything of interest at the beach, I'll post up when I get back.
I really enjoy reading and looking at the different things you guys find.
Any professional pointers will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

<< <i>Welcome. Take your time when hunting and enjoy. Fill in ALL holes and don't leave a mess.
and most importantly.......find some good stuff.....welcome
I've never beach hunted so I won't be any help to ya but.....
Hope you find some good finds!
Yes, I was told by my brother how to properly dig a hole and replace it. I have since taught my daughter and she does a pretty good job.
If this will get her interested in collecting then I wll be very happy. She loves older things like I do and has a lot of me in her. My oldest daughter thinks I'm weird....lol.
Thanks again.
<< <i>I'm curious, is it ok to metal detect along a river? Do you have to contact anyone first? >>
The mighty Phut has a site on a riverbank that has produced well for him, but I also know there is a ton of trash to sift through to find the good stuff in these areas. Creeks and rivers were common dump places by 19th century folks.
Depending where the stream runs through...private property, of course you will need permission from the owner. In state and local parks you will need to find out from the correct authorities if it is permitted.
