1994-D cent, what is happening in the mintmark?

Found in change. I am not a cent collector, but this jumped out at me. It looks like there as another D mint mark, rotated about 30-40 degrees right anchored to the left lower edge of the original D mintmark. Is the left most vertical of the secondary D running through the loop of the main mint mark? The primary, original mint mark is simply broken about one quarter, at roughly 100 through 180 degrees.

There is a hole in the coin full of crud, this was found in change. There appears to be remnants of another D at the top across the main mintmark, left to right. Ideas?

  • not sure but it appears the outer and inner portions did not get along and a chemical reaction happened which caused a bubble---some one correct me if i am wrong
