Cards with slightly different sized holders

I was looking at two 1934 Goudey cards I had, and noticed the size of the area for the card was slightly different by about 1 cm T/B and 1 cm L/R. (I don't mean the size of the overall holder, but the area where the card sits). It is not that big of a difference, but for the card in the smaller holder, it makes it look like it is an oversized card. And in comparison when next to each other, one could look at the card in the bigger holder and think it was a bit small or trimmed.

Any info on the difference holders would be useful..thanks in advance.

Usually it is just a function of what slabs are available when the sealer does his thing. It is also possible that the card in the larger sized card area is in fact slightly oversized, just enough so that it wouldn't fit into the standard Goudey slab. This is fairly common with prewar cards where quality control wasn't exactly high on the list of priorities.
  • Here's a pic of the two slabs so my question is a bit clearer. It is not an issue of poor quality control by Goudey back in the 30s. And I also don't think it is a question of which slab the PSA sealer took...because why would they have two different slabs that are just one cm apart from each other? And just to make sure there is no confusion - I measured both cards - and they are identical T/B and L/R.

the scan is small because i had to fit it into a 50KB file....but you can see there is space between the card and the holder on the card on the left, but not on the right.
