WOW, Nice PF 1957 Franklin + a cool error Frankie

This proof franklin looks like it was struck through lint or thread, on both the obverse and reverse! I am positive the marks are not scratches, and it is extremely hard to photograph the marks well. They change in depth, direction, and have a texture to them. Is this sort of an error worth slabbing?

And this coin... WOW! I thought it was only a weak cameo beneath all the haze that was on this coin! There was a large milk spot, but I managed to remove it without harming the coin. It turned out to be much nicer than I had initially thought!

What did you use to clean up the proofs? image

  • I used some MS70 to get rid of the haze, and some other stuff to help get rid of the milk spot. You can still see a small amount of it left above the 19 in the date. After I get my ANA membership I plan on sending this coin along with several others to NCS.

Did you dilute with water, or just use at full strength?

Tell us what the "other stuff" is, that works on milk spots, por favor!

  • Yes, please tell us what works on milk spots!

I have been a collector for over mumbly-five years. I learn something new every day.
  • This was not an opaque milk spot, so it was not actually "part" of the coins surface. As far as cleaning it goes, I let the coin sit in a 100% MS70 for a few minutes. I do not swirl, stir, or aggravate the MS70 in any way. I remove the coin after a few minutes, rinse with distilled water, determine if it needs to go back into the MS70 for a while longer or not. After the coin is as clean as desired, then I submerge it in isopropyl alchohol (rubbing alcohol) for about 30 seconds. In this case most of the spot was removed by the MS70. Then I thoroughly rinse the coin using distilled water.

The idea is that allowing the coin to sit will get it clean without running the risk of causing hairlines, but it will take a longer time. If one wanted to do the process faster, then a warm water bath could be made around the container containing the MS70 and coin. This would cause the process to go faster, but the effort required is more than a lazy teen wishes to put out.

Any additional spots are to be removed by the MadMarty Method, as explained here.

But any thoughts on the 1957 Frankie?

  • Yes, the 57 looka like a gem cameo.

The lint/threads struck into the 59 are probably too minor to draw any interest as an error.

BTW- If you want to save some dough, Mr. Clean = MS70.
