    USPS registered mail

    Hands down.

I will be mailing boxes of very valuable cards next week and decided Registered mail is the way to go for security reasons.

Actually I said my auction stated s/h/sig confirm and required insurance. He emailed and asked my price (I never offered best price/offer in this auction). I emailed and said $2750 + s/h + required insurance. So he has to pay what's on the auction. The next thing I know he used buy it now and paid only $2750. I asked him for the s/h and insurance and he said no deal to it. He said he thought using buy it now shipping and insurance are free. I never said shipping and insurance are free with buy it now. My auction is buy it now anyway and has no best offer/price offered.

I have no idea how he was able to pay without the shipping info at the bottom. I know I had it on my preference that they have to contact me for invoice unless ebay changed something in there.

I'm checking out the best option: ship safely or refund him the money.

I already called paypal and said I can refund the money. I also went to live help and explain to them. Live help said I can refund the money and get credit for ebay final fee.

Why not just pay the few bucks for the USPS insurance?

Depending on who was handling the buyer's "chargeback request"
at PayPal, you could easily end up with no product and no payment,
if you shipped the product uninsured and it got "lost" or "damaged due to
    inadequate packaging."

    USPS registered, by far.
I wouldn't trust fedex with anything at this point. Totally incompetant.

    greatcornholio,

Shipping and required insurance for $2750 stated on my auction description. he paid by paypal. paypal wants online tracking sig confirm for $250 and over. Paypal suggested UPS with sig.

    Storm,

I mail expensive cards wrap in plastic bubble with name address of buyer inside and in a box. I think insurance for this is about $30. Paypal already ate up $81 and ebay $57 on this auction alone.

  • My next question why would you even consider Paypal on an item that expensive that is just asking for trouble??
  • storm888storm888 Posts: 11,701 ✭✭✭
Yup. It gets expensive to sell expensive items on eBay.

    $2750.00 less $175.00 in eBay/PayPal/Insured Mailing fees,
leaves a gross receipt of $2575.00.

    If you "save" the $30.00 for insurance, your gross receipt is $2605.00;
AND, with the help of PayPal an evil buyer can steal both the item and
    the money.

That's why I require insurance on items over $50.
I don't have 1000+ FB (just 500) nor powerseller. I don't sell that much. At $2750 and not offering paypal few will look at your item.

What's the best option here? Refund the money?

I'll email him tonight if that's the best.

The buyer also sells cards on ebay not a great FB 98+%

    Storm,

What do you mean pay a few bucks? Insured it for 100?

Yeah! real eaxpensive especially if that item is listed on ebay store. The final fees are expensive on stores (I don't have a store). That's why I wonder why some sellers put up expensive items in their store. Listing is cheap but it will eat up your $$ on final fee.

No. I would pay the $28.00 for the insurance. UNLESS, I did not want
to do the deal; then, I would refund the PayPal payment because
"the buyer did not meet the stated sale terms."

The total "selling cost" of this sale is way less than 10% of the price.
That is a good deal, if you want to do the deal.

If you do not want the money now - and think that you can do better
with another buyer - I would just refund the buyer. Be sure to block him
    from your future listings.

It costs me $16.90 to mail a 1 pound package with registered mail and insurance at $2800 from PA to Florida.

I would spend the $20.00 or less and get the deal done, unless you're selling a card that lots of people want. Don't pass on 2750 over $20. Ship it and remind the guy that he stiffed you when you leave his feedback.

    Jimq,

thanks for the info I checked the usps site and it's actually cheaper if mailed registered insured ($16+) than regular mail insured mail. I think have to do everthing at post office counter for this.

It's a pujols card I sold. I hate selling it because I know still going to go up but I needed the money. Like storm888 said I'll put him on my block list. I checked the ebay preference and they've changed. probably that's why it got through. Someone paid me before him on another item but the buyer added ship & insurance in place. Before, I know there's an option that I checked that they have to request total/invoice before they can pay.

I'll probably get my first neg if I say he stiffed me on s/h/ins. I'll probably just not leave FB unless he said something real bad. I think he's already immune to negs (I think he got 16 negs) his rating is 98+% (1000+FB). he buys and sells cards. He himself charge $30 for fedex shipping. His buy it now is free ship & ins but you wouldn't like the BIN price. I forgot it's .20 cents list fee day some sellers jack up prices.

Thanks for everyone's input and hope this will go smoothly now.

  • USPS and FedEx are both fine - no problems. Here is a dumb question though. What is the difference between registered and insured mail? Besides registered having to be signed by all parties who come in contact with said item.

    Slats -

Registered mail is the most "important" mail to USPS. We have numbered sealed rings that go thru and seal the bags that registered mail are carried in. There is a list in each bag of what items are in there. They are supposedly scanned every time they move. The truck driver hands it specifically to the clerk when it comes in the door. If it cannot be delivered the carrier returns it to the clearance clerk, who signs for it, and it is immediately locked in the safe. The clerk checks your ID before you get the package. If I lose your registered mail I will be personally responsible for it and I may lose my job.

Insured mail is the same as delivery confirmation except the post office pays if it gets lost or broken and was packed well. It comes in the same bag as parcel post, and is more or less treated that way.

I ship everything I sell for over $250 with registered mail.

yeah i'm sorry but if someone can afford a card that costs over $2k, they can bloody well afford to pay their own S&H and insurance costs.. sometimes people pay really fast trying to take advantage of sellers in just this way.. write him back and say hey you owe me X for shipping, or if he paid with pay pal, send a money request.. if he refuses, act like you're going to re-list the card and see if that changes his tune at all...

also, if you set it up the auction so that shipping is required and comes up automatically at the end of the auction when they try to pay, it makes life easier and prevents weasel tactics like this.
