What`s with PCGS`s FBL standards ??

I`d say a good 10% of the holdered PCGS FBL Franklins I see are not even

almost FBL's ........... and 10% of non FBL`s are no brainer FBL's .

And why are some dates given the FBL so freely and other's have to be chiseled in stone ??

Depends on the service level and how many times they have to look at it. Remember that song ? Ring my bell.

    Bear,

How many sides on those dice have FBL, or FSB, or FS on them?
Or do they use different dice for different coins?image

Grading can vary its a lot better than sporting events where the officals are not allowed to use there seeing eye dogs on the field. If you don't like the coin don't buy it.
Most dealers Grading was new or used when I started & most still didn't get it right.

Recent bids for PCGS 66 FBL 1948D FBL's--$475, $775, $1050---Why do we need PCGs to designate FBL again???

  • .......... ....I just got a pretty `54-D PCGS MS65 Franklin off ebay .

It has the most strongly struck , boldly impressed , FULL , full bell lines

I have ever seen on a circulation strike Franklin !!

In fact , the left hand lower bell lines go ALL THE WAY to the crack of the bell,

they actually touch it ! I have NEVER seen a Franklin with bell lines like this .........

But it dosn`t say F.B.L on the holder !!!!!!!!!!

on the very far right side of the coin , there is a minor scrape -

mushing the last 1/32 of an inch of the lower bell lines .

Montgomery said in R. Tomaska`s book that " the graderers have to

make the call if the bell lines were their to begin with "

clearly the bell lines were there on this coin ,

so that criteria must have changed for that idea too !

It seems PCGS has altered their deffinition of fbl`s .

    It used to be the lower set to the left of the crack made the call ;

now it appears the lines must be full on the RIGHT side of the crack as well .

This is highly disturbing to me and should be to fbl collectors too .

There are thousands of PCGS Franklins in fbl holders that if resubmitted ,

by today`s standards - would not get the fbl call .

It is totaly unfair to change the horse halfway thru the race .

What is to become of these not fbl coins in older fbl holders ?

    Will they be saleable ?

I hope PCGS offers to buy back the ones that don`t make the "new" fbl grade

    at the full purchase price,

thats the very LEAST they can do.

How dare they do something so brash as to change their deffinition like this ??

This thead is worthless without pics of the bell lines! I just made a 54-S in MS65FBL at PCGS. I knew it was a FBL and it got a FBL! Until you have a pic for us to look at quit complaining!

    I'M with Marty, I sent in a 51S & 52. They both looked FBL to me and came back 51S MS64FBL and 52 MS63FBL. I thought the 52 should have been 64..................oh well.............Rick

No argument from me that FSB on Mercs and FBL on Frankies is a joke and has been for years. I'd say the services are at least in the ball park on FH SLQ's. Full Step Jeffs have their own issues as well.

It's just a "FULLY" struck world out there.

The graders may be arbitrary and they may be capricious.

I bought it for the toning -i could care less about bell lines ..........

my point my chicken faced friend ; is that the coin has obviously FBL`s -

but it is not labled as such on the holder
