Postal workers....

You know, if I was a disgruntled postal worker with no morals living near Newport Beach, I would steal as many PSA packages as I could in 2 weeks then hit the road. Has anybody done this? There have to be postal workers that know about cards. You could easily get away with a few hundred thousand dollars worth of stuff, send it in to BGS to get graded and make a killing. I find it hard to believe there hasn't been one mass theft of PSA packages from a postal facility. One of the guys at my old PO stole cards (incl. a 93 Piazza refractor) out of 2 packages before I caught on to what was happening. They found him and I assume he got fired. He should've just transferred to Newport Beach and gone for the big hit.

  • That is why PSA wants you to send the cards registered. Anyone who comes in contact with a registered mail is required to sign a chain of custody.
  • The Atlanta post office is full of criminals - every single package of mine that got stolen was traced to them.

I believe the most frequently stolen items are those insured for under $50. You don't fill out the blue form, and when they get stolen, the claim is with the local post office - no investigation, but it's still valuable enough to steal.

Now that I'm thinking, that day when my Piazza refractor was stolen was won of the worst days of my life at the time. I was a nearly broke college student and I sold off a bunch of my cards to buy the 93 refractor from someone off the newsgroups. I had a buyer for it at $1000 and the guy sold it to me for $750, so it should have been a quick $250 for me which was enough to get me by for like 2 months. Instead, the guy only insured it for $500 and somebody at the PO slit the package with a razor and slid the card out, leaving me with an empty $750 bubble mailer. Luckily I saw it while I was still in front of the PO clerk and she gave me the paperwork to fill out. I had to wait 3 months to lose $250. I was so distraught driving home from the PO that I got into a fender-bender with a guy in front of me at a stoplight.

To the guy who stole the card if you're out there- Your mother's a whore.

PSA has a phantom box. All mail addressed to them comes to the GMF in their district and somebody from PSA comes to pick it up. I'm positive that they go thru each package and check it off against the incoming registered mail list.

Registered mail doesn't go through the plant. It is handed by the truck driver to the receiving clerk, signed for, and then passed on. Everybody who touches it signs for it and is personally responsible for it.

I don't think PSA has an incoming mail theft problem.

Mail carriers stealing mail is uncommon. More often it's the mail handlers working almost unsupervised 3rd shift. I'm not calling out any mail handlers but they seem to get caught here. They're not accountable for any packages and it would be "easier" for them to get away with it. If they are suspected then the target mail starts flying until they take the bait.

When I leave the office, I might have 3 certified letters, 35 delivery confirmations, 1 registered mail package, and 4 signature insureds. They mark down qty of certified, signature confirmations, express mail, and I sign for that quantity. I do not sign for delivery confirmation, under $50 insured and parcel post or priority.

Most stolen mail is birthday type cards, and parcels. By far more mail is stolen after being delivered than stolen by USPS workers.

I once had a gold ring custom made for me with my department's patch and design. The ring was stolen by the UPS driver who picked it up from the ring company. He stole a bunch of gold rings. About 3 weeks later, I received a phone call from a pawn shop in Ohio where some crackhead had sold them my ring. The wise shop owner knew that cops didnt just sell these types of rings and this one looked brand new.
  • I must live in a fairy tale world, because I never thought about postal workers stealing cards addressed to PSA, BGS, SGC etc....WOW, but it makes perfect sense and just made me change my shipping habits when I submit. Thanks for the heads up Lee and for helping me remove my melon from my rectum and see a little more light image
